Right-Hand Drive Vehicles in Uzbekistan

Just crossed the border into UZ with my RHD Toyota. Customs said RHD vehicles were not allowed in UZ, but after some debate and a phone call to their superior, they let me in. Might be an idea to check with an embassy / get a letter etc if you plan to enter in a RHD car. I have not seen any other RHD cars here. Road are OK though, so far!

Stan(ley) Road(s)

Hi Daniel,

Sorry I can't help in anyway, but I am actually asking if yu can help me. I am travelling from London to China in my Land Rover 110, and am heading out of Turkey, avoiding Iran, into Turk'stan by crossing the Caspian Sea - which route did you take? have you a website?

I went through Russia, thus avoiding Turkmnistan, but I've met people who drove through Azerbaijan, then got the ferry to Kazakhstan (Aktau).

Things to bear in mind:

Azerbaijan will only allow you three day's transit, unless you leave a full-value cash deposit for your vehicle at the border. You can leave the car / bike in the customs area for as long as you want and explore the country by other means, but I'm not sure how safe this is.

Turkmenistan is expensive to enter by car, and there seems to be no certainty in getting a transit visa.

The ferry to Aktau is sporadic, you might have to wait a few days in Baku.

Make sure your suspension is in top shape, as the roads in Western Kazakhstan are BAD. Expect to do 30km/h for a few days.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I hope you're only avoiding Iran to avoid getting a Carnet. It's propbably one of the best countries in the world to travel in!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
