Oz to UK via Russia
 

Hey all, new to this site but learning lots already.

I am English working on Oz for a while, so have bought a Landcruiser to play with and plan to drive it back to the UK. I worked for many years in Russia, Central Asia and many of the former Soviet states so kind of know my way around.

I have been on long vehicle based trips before and this seems to mix in well with everything i have done.

I have already been asking on the visa front but one thing hit me today, when i have taken a UK registered vehicle into Ukraine i had all my docs like V5 and MOT, but you dont seem to get anything like that in Oz, just the rego document so i'm wondering what docs i will need to take my truck over the border?

Also need to find a shipping agent for Darwin to Vladivostock, any suggestions?

Hi you will defiantly need some form of V5 for your vehicle they check this at all the border crossing you will come across , they dont know what an MOT is though and i have never been asked to show one ( they some times call the V5 the vehicle passport) , what ever your paper is check that the Vin Numbers of your truck are the same as on paperwork some times they will check this out at the border

I'm American so don't know what documents you're referring to, but I have a us-plated bike which I bring in and out of Russia every year. I only have a title for this bike, no registration, but have never had a problem. The US title does not actually indicate the license number, so they always ask about that, but I just tell them "that's not how we do it" and that's the end of it.

I think if you have any kind of official document showing VIN and license number you'll have no problem.

I just used a Queensland rego certificate (which is printed on plain white paper) No problems with UK, Europe, Russia, Kaz,Uzb,Tadj,Kyr or Mongolia.

Also ship to Sth Korea and Dong Hae ferry is probably your best bet. I would contact on of the RORO guys probably out of Sydney I am not sure what they do once a ship load of Korean cars is delivered, go back empty?

Sounds like a rego certificate is prity much the same as a uk V5 certificate

You will struggle with any direct service for Darwin to Vlad. Usual route for all shipping ex Australia to Asia is via Singapore. Most overlanders use the S Korea option as its usually a bit easier to enter paperwork wise, then ferry to Vlad.

You'll need to pre arrange green card insurance for Russia right through to the UK, its easy now.

Aus rego documents show the plate number and VIN so no problems there.

RoRo will be cheaper than putting everything in a shipping container, Darwin might be a long trip as I think Darwin is a first port of call ex Singapore, then Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, NZ, back to Singapore or round to Adelaide and Perth then to Singapore.

Insurance in Russia is cheap as chip 6 months for my 950 cost about $20.

From the advice, it is best to ship to S Korea, not on the original plan but might be a chance for a bit of a look around while there. Are there camping sites in Korea?

How do i ship to S Korea without an address, i saw on the other posts about a contact for a temp import cert, so do i do that then fly in and collect from the port?

Then ferry to Vlad. Visa will be no worries, but what arrangements/visas are needed for vehicle? When i recently crossed into Ukraine it was no worries, just a bit of registration and checking of my docs and insurance. Any reccommendations for insurance companies?

To import/export in Vlad it is a little more painful than the normal land crossing borders, for effort I would contact Yuri Melkinov at Links to help with the import ymelnik (at) links-ltd (dot) com he will point you in the direction of an insurance office also.

I read that RTWDoug preferred Zaruvino (SE of Vlad) as POE. He said it was a lot less hassle than Vlad.

Not sure, don't think so. Not from SK anyway and to go to Japan mean a CDP.

The ferry to Vlad from Korea is the same one that goes from Japan.
JP --> SK --> RU-->SK-->JP ...
The only other ferry to Russia from Japan goes to Sakhalin Island, not Vladivostok. (It is cheaper, though.)
