obtaining visa in turkey
 

hi all.

did any one applied for a visa to the stan's and/or Russia in turkey (and got a visa) ? we carry a German and a Norwegian passports.

Yep, got visas for Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in Turkey. You may be able to get some in Istanbul too. For a couple of visas, we applied in Istanbul and picked up the visas in Ankara to save some time.

thanks a lot dave for that info, picking the visa in ankara is a great idea, i didnt know it could be done, do you remeber the avarage time you had to wait for a visa ?

I remember Uzbekistan was 3 days, but we applied in Istanbul and picked it up in Ankara. Turkmenistan was 1 day in Ankara and Tajikistan was the same day in Ankara. We got our Kyrgyz visas on the spot in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, really easy there. You will probably need a letter of invitation for Tajikistan, but we talked our way out of it as the ambassador was out of town.

Don't forget that even though the embassies may have a standard waiting time for the visas, often they can make exceptions and get you the visas early, or let you apply without leaving your passport. If you have several visas to get at once in one place, you will have to be creative in dealing with the embassies. We got 3 Central Asian visas (Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) in 3 days in Ankara but it was hard work. Be friendly, present yourself in a professional manner and you will maximize their chances of helping you.

Turkmenistan won't be too flexible on their visa policy, but Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan should have some flexibility. Turkmenistan is the toughest to get followed by Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan is the easiest. At least this was the case in the summer of 2005.

hi i got my russian, kazakh an mongol visas all in ankara, the kazakhi embassy were really friendly an took only 2 days, ive an irish passport, the guy there even gave me his mobile number in case i got into any bother while in kazakhstan, which i never even had the hint of, enjoy!

Azer/Uzbek/Kazak visas obtained in Istanbul
 

Collected Azerbaijan visa (UK resident) today.
Took 3 days to process.
Did not need loi.
Did not make booking with any hotel/organisation, but used a valid hotel address in Baku as the answer to "where you stay" question.
Visa cost 60TRY or $40
Need to take along 2 photcopies of passport and 2 photographs.

Now also collected UZBEKISTAN visa (UK resident).
Took few hours to process. I have been also told by an American that can get visa without loi but takes a week to process.
Do need loi. (Got mine from StanTours)
Visa cost $80
Need to take along 2 photcopies of passport and 2 photographs.

Consulate insisted today (that's 5th April 07) on having original loi with visa application.
Could wait obviously if I wanted and had the time but have opted to get visa on point of entry.
Assured no problem so long as the original loi is there as well (i.e. the person meeting us from StanTours will have original loi)

Just to share, here my experience on getting visas for Azerbaidshan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

Azerbaidshan: 3 working days in Istanbul, no problem. cost 60 Euros.

I am in Ankara right now, wait for my Turmen visa till Monday. Here the facts how I got it:
- went to Turkmen embassy in Istanbul, gave them copy of passport.
- after 7 working days they received confirmatin from Ashgabat which I had them redirect to Ankara.
- In the meanwhile I went to Ankara, applied for Uzbekistan visa. Same deal, takes about one week until confirmation comes. I did a round trip to Antalya (awesome backcountry roads through part of the Taurus mountains) and got a week of fantastic climbing in.
- Now I am back in Ankara, collected the Uzbek visa, but was too late to do the Turkmen.
- Wait till Monday to get Turkmen visa

cost:
60$+20$ for Uzbekistan
51$(same day service) for Turkmenistan

LOI not needed

hope somebody can use this info, dont hesitate asking questions.

btw, has anybody info on getting Tadjik visa en route?
