New Ferry Service from Korea to Vladivostok
 

DBS Cruise Ferry it is called. Starts at Dong-Hae south of Sok-Cho
Old Dongchun I guess too much financial problems and labour strife.

New ferry goes Dong-Hae - Sakai Minato, Japan - Vladivostok. It is a Ro-Ro vessel so you just roll on and off.

I am finally all set to go. Starting out by shipping the bike on Wallenius Line. Inchon to Long Beach on March 20th,,, on their car carrier for USD 300. Yes 300 ,,vessel arrives April 10th....I will fly in 8th,, will cross USA most of it on I-40 ,, head on through southern states to DC for daughter's graduation,, then to Manhattan then ship the bike again on Wallenius from Elizabeth, NJ to Bremerhaven ,, spend a week in Berlin.. couple of days in Latvia,,. Lithuania,, time with friends in Moscow ,,, to Vlad using Colebatch's GPS ,,

Really hate camping ,, hope there are inns and motels between Chita and Khavarovsk ,, any one have a list of such inns and motels, between those two barren space?

I see Colebatch's post on small inns and motels..
"My advice, if you were hoping for B&Bs and don't want to take a tent, is yes you CAN get away with leaving the tent at home. There are pretty much some sort of cheap hotels at every town you are likely to come across travelling across Russia, KZ and Mongolia.

Learn the following word: "гостиница"

pronounced gass-TIN-itsa (emphasis on the capitals) ... means a hotel, motel, hostel, B&B, guesthouse, pension ... basically anywhere that takes guests overnight."

Also another rider wrote,
"If you dont want to take your tent , you can just sleep at truck stops, they are always cheap, clean sometimes have dooshes (showers) or a bunya. Always have food! I spent a few weeks stopping at these places since it was too cold and wet to camp. I had a great time talking and drinking with the local truck drivers at night."

That's good to hear that there is an alternate ferry service available between S. Korea and Vlad

Offer still stands for a bed and beer, if you make it through Alanta, GA on your way to New York and I'm not traveling myself.

Motels, fuel and cafes all the way along the Trans Siberian Highway - generally no more than about every 100miles (160km).
Now it is tarmac all the way from Vladivostock to the Atlantic Ocean which makes much of it a rather boring monotonous journey. How many trees do you need to see?

Don't even think of weighing yourself down with a tent, stove etc unless you are going on remote roads/tracks. A sleeping bag is always useful if there is only floor space left!

Learn to read the Cyrillic alphabet and simple Russian courtesy/question phrases.

PM me if you have not been intouch with Joon (Sangjoon) in Seoul who we met in Vlad in 2009 and who rode all the way to UK then to USA. He will have lots of advice.

Thank you kindly sir,, I am,,, on purpose doing the southern states. Been to US ,, many many times, mostly, Ca., NY, Wa., Il., including New Orleans and Florida but never the real south. Your offer sounds great ,, except your name T.Rex ,, how many riders got out of your home alive?

Joon and Cyrillic Alphabet

I belong to the blog, where Joon is ,, as well as others, who made the journey. I am reading them as well as here,, several hours a day.
I have well noted the importance of learning the alphabet and some phrases for it will break the ice with respect for the Russian culture. Damn hard though, even though I speak English, German , French and Spanish. Gee , now they throw Cyrillic alaphabet at me,, ;(

Tent is staying home ,, a small sleeping bag gets packed.

Actually, DBS started operating last year (2010). A friend rode it from Sakaiminato to Vladivostok last year.
Did Dongchun stop operating altogether? I seem to remember Colebatch took it last year from Sokcho to Vladivostok.

From the sound of it, sketchy at best. Wendy Choi suggests (Feb. 10, 2011) looking for alternatives because no date for resuming operation has been given by the ferry operator...

not really surprised, in july 2009 there were around 20 passengers ,4 bikes and about 3 cars travelling nth. cant have been much profit on that sailing.

Yes ,, they started in late summer of 2010 as Dong Chun was struggling.
DBS routing of Korea - Russia - Japan non stop probably keeps revunue stream better.

Got a rate from Wallenius again for Atlantic crossing ex Baltimore to Bremerhaven.
They have weekly service. Shipping from New Jersey is 100 bucks cheaper.

Samara should be something more like 'CAMAPA' ... the others look sorta kinda right, note the 'b' you have in moscow, should look like a capital Latin B ... as in MOCKBA ... a small western 'b' is a different letter in cyrillic
