Mongolian visa outside home country?

Hi guys,

I am preparing for a trip through Europe, Turkey, the 'Stans, Mongolia and Russia next year. I think I have most of the Visa issues sorted out but I'm a bit concerned about Mongolia.

There dosen't seem to be too much talk around the Mongolia visa on the forums which hopefully means that it is reasonably straight forward. From the embassy website it appears that (as an Australian citizen) I can get a tourist visa valid for 30 days for $100. Unfortunately the visa is only valid for 3 months from date of issue which is cutting it very fine as we will be on the road for that long before we reach Mongolia. Am I right in presuming that 3 months includes the time I am in the country? Is it possible and reasonably easy to extend the 3 month period, or we make it to Mongolia within the 3 months then extend the visa once we are in the country?

Finally I couldn't find any information on applying for a Visa a Mongolian embassy on route. Has anyone done that?

Thanks and sorry if my questions have already been covered in the forums.

you presume incorrectly - the way Mongolian tourist visas work is your visa is valid FOR ENTRY, up to 3 months after the date of issue. You THEN have 30 days to stay in country. You can also get a 30 day visa extension in UB.

I have never heard you can not get a Mongolian visa outside your own country and I (in both Australian and British passports at various times) have received several Mongolian visas in the past in two Russian cities; Ulan Ude and Irkutsk. I have also been granted Mongolian visas at the consulate in Huhhot in China. That seems to be empirical evidence that you can get Mongolian visas outside your home country.

Thanks for the info! I was hoping that what you said would be the case, I just couldn't find any info on the embassy website.

I'm following your latest ride report on adv with a lot of interest, with any luck my adventures in that part of the world will be half as interesting as yours!

Ditto what Walter says......and also yes, its easy to extend the visa BUT the place to do it is now out by the airport and not in UB, despite what guide books tell you. The office moved a couple of years ago.

visa - mongolia

 Great, so were travelling to Mongolia this Year but we are Australian Citizens but we lived in the UK for the past year or so on our Visa's. We will be leaving the UK and travelling west to east. And leaving in a week and we have no time to get a Mongolia Visa in the UK ... So we were hoping to get this on the road. So confirmed we can obtain this quickly in Kazakhstan?

If you ask really nicely at the Mongolian Embassy in Kensington and tell them u r bikers they will do it by the time u return with your HSBC payment receipt. I.e. In less than 30 mins.

One of visa guys there has a brother who is a rally rider. Apparently he came second one year in the Rally Mongolia.
