Leaving a Vehicle behind in Kazakhstan?
I am off round Central Asia, Iran etc in the summer and I don't have much time to do it. My plan was to give the van away in Kazakhstan and fly home. Has anyone got experience of driving in and flying out?

I dont want to pay fines and i want to be able to visit again without been collared for leaving a van behind before.

I have done this before but there are a couple of things to be aware of:
make sure when you enter KZ you get the small white immigration entry paper and do not loose it, on my first trip over the border guys were more interested in my bike and never actually gave me the paper which caused a few problems when going out through the airport.
The other is the amount of time they give you on the temp import papers, you can get upto 6 months but they normally give you less. So ask for as long as possible because the paper will still need to be in date when you take the bike back out. If it runs out then trying to extend it will cost you.

basically its not kosher.

you get an import permit for your car ... as mentioned above, in KZ it has a maximum time of 6 months on it. If the car is in the country longer than that, then you are liable for import duty as you have imported the car.

Maybe you could get around it by wrecking the car and getting a police statement that the car is wrecked, then take that to customs to exempt you from taking it out ... maybe there are other ways around it ... but I doubt they will be legal.

Basically when you bring a vehicle into any country on a tax free temporary import basis, you have an obligation to take it out again, and you are only allowed to use it for personal use when in the country. If you dont, then its a permanent import and you pay import duty.

Seeling it
What about seeling the car in Kazakhstan instead? We have a similar situaiton we are currentlu in Kyrgystan making our way to Kazakhstan and flying back home. We will need to either sell the car, scrap it or ship it. our favourite option currenlty is to sell it as it is expesnive to ship it back to Europe and it has been a good car! Many thanks for your help.
