Kyrgystan

I will be passing through Kyrgystan this summer and wonder are there any restrictions on travelling from Narin - Karakol - Kara Say - Engilchek?

Yes and no.

In August 2008 we rode that route. We crossed in from Kazahkstan through Karkara then turned down toward Engilchek (on the A364 according to Google Maps). Everything was fine and it was a good ride all the way through to Engilchek. But when we arrived at the town we were stopped at a military check point and not allowed any further.

We needed a border zone permit from Karakol. They were friendly and helpful and rang all sorts of superiors, but simply couldn't let us through without that paperwork.

So riding to Engilchek is fine, but if going further (up towards the glacier) then you need to sort out some paperwork in Karakol.

I was riding there last summer. No problem with any permit if you are foreigner and you have visa.
But floods autumn 2009 has destroyed bridge and most of the other trail 2010.
I'll give a try but no change you might do it with very light enduro.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
