Japan mandatory insurance

Hi, I'll be in Japan from April-June and am having trouble finding any info about obtaining Japanese Compulsory Automobile Liability Insurance (CALI). I found plenty of Insurance companies that will provide insurance in excess of this, but I'm not clear on how to get the CALI that is required. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Well, a little late for being "just as soon as..." but here goes:

talk to Motochika Yamaguchi who works for Occidental Corporation.

address: 2F New Empire Building, 2-17-17 Meguro Honcho, Meguro-Ku, Tokyo, JAPAN 152-0002

Tel (03) 5768-6022
Fax (03) 5768-6021
email: insurance@occidental.co.jp

I purchased 3 months of mandatory liability insurance for less than $60 USD and it took about 30 minutes for the entire procedure. Getting to the building is another matter entirely as I took the subway, then train, then a tricky change... I should have wrote it down for all of you. You WILL need to bring your Title, International Driver's Licence, and Carnet(which must be verified first by JAF - Japan Auto Federation, see Chris Lockwood's site for info). Mr. Yamaguchi has done this before , speaks english very well, will explain to you the Japanese laws for what to do in case of an accident, etc... For this insurance you MUST have an address somewhere in Tokyo. This is what will appear on the insurance certificate. You can give the address of your hotel, your friend, the local homeless shelter, whatever, you just need to make sure that you can receive mail there as the certificate will arrive by mail a couple of days later.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
