Question Who were you? Kazakhstan 1995

A good friend and I took a motorcycle trip on two Ural motorcycles with sidecars from Bishkek to Ulan Ude in July and August of 1995. Somewhere in Kazakhstan (or possibly southern Siberia), in late July I believe, we were stopped by the side of the road sorting out (yet another) problem with the bikes, when we were passed by a rider clearly outfitted for a serious trip. They were riding a Japanese or European bike with large aluminum panniers. They were riding fast, maybe 75mph, and we did not see them until they had passed us, and were disappearing down the long, open road across the plain. I couldn't swear to it, but I seem to remember them wearing a full-body riding suit, maybe white or light colored. They were the only thing resembling a tourist we saw during our entire Russian trip, and after days of dirt and hunger camping and rumbling along on our slow bikes, they looked like something out of another world. I've always wondered who it was. Was it you? Flan88.

You have a better chance of being hit by lightning than you do of finding that rider twelve years after he rode by.

If it was a HUBB member we can start narrowing it down, so I will start off and say "it was not me"

Thanks, guys. Appreciate it's a long shot, but I imagine there can't have been too many people fitting that description riding around there in the summer of 95? Flan88

It was the HU ghost rider. On those really lonely rides in the middle of nowhere he just turns up, and is gone. Roaming the planet on an airhead GS.
Whooo...scarey. Has anyone else seen him?

Welcome to the site flan.
It wasn't me either I'm afraid.
Unless that is you spotted a load of money falling out of my super duper panniers as I rode past and you want to return it.

Wasnt me ... Was there in '94 ... no alloy panniers and no speed.

Try asking the Mondo Enduro guys . They were in KZ in 1995 and may have some contacts.

There were not a lot of people riding around back then ( i didnt see any other westerner on a bike between China and Finland over 3 months in 1994) so their convoy (7 bikes) may well have spotted him or have been spotted by your mystery guy.

You didnt mention where in KZ and in what direction the bike was travelling

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
