Japan without Carnet
Heard that there is no need of CDP entering Japan from Sachalin, Russia to
Wakkanai, Hokkaido. Anyone who has done this recently by motorbike?

I heard the same, and bikers who came to my house indicated this, too!

Chris would be the best person to give you a 100% answer on this. Hope he will be here on the forum soon !!

A German guy named Christian Schachtner told me he was going to try last month, but I haven't heard anything from him since then. Do you know of him, Klaus?

I just sent him an email. If I get an answer, I will tell you what he said.

You ask for Chris and here he is !!!

No, have not heard anything from Christian until now. Maybe he will still contact me?

Anyway, if I am not all wrong it were either Heidi and Bernd on their KTMs last year or Alexandra and Andre this year who told me that no carnet was needed (maybe both couples???).

Hope we can verify this - the sooner the better! Oh, and I contacted Heidi and Bernd, waiting for an answer from them - they are in Panama right now *_*!

Answer as of August 2012:

I just got an email from the German guy I mentioned.
He said that he came without a carnet on the ferry from Sakahlin to Wakkanai
Cost all together in Wakkanai port was about 20,000 yen (about US$250) for motorbike insurance, import tax and for the agent. Pay in YEN, so try to get yen before arriving. Or you will have to go to the city center to find a bank.

Ferry cost is 25,000 yen/person + 9,000 per motorcycle (according to website)

For your information, the ferry sails in September on
5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 25, 28

One more time concerning the Carnet:

this is the e-mail I received from Heidi & Bernd (presently in Costa Rica):

der zoll in wakkanai will keine carnets, also keine bange!!! für die ist es einfacher, ihre papiere zu machen. alles super easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! er soll im hubb sichen nach verschiffung russland japan, da hab ich alles genau gepostet!

Translation (just in case): the Wakkanai customs does not want a carnet - don't worry!!! It is easier for them to handle only their paperwork - all very easy!!! Check the HUBB for shipping Russia to Japan, I posted everything in detail there!

So, this is the way it looks like -

Concerning the weather, maybe I can talk to the weather Gods over here in Japan and maybe they will have an open ear .

Just a follow up to this. The German guy (who is also Chris) is finding it quite hard to find freight from Japan to Canada. Just something to consider.

I have been in contact with Christian.
I think he decided to go by sea freight from a shipper I recommended.

Air freight from Japan can be quite expensive.
I don't know why it is so much more than other countries, but only one person I know has shipped by air. He practically disassembled his bike to make it as small as possible. There is not much 'local' information on air shipping as most Japanese travelers shipping from here are on their first leg of a trip and not in a great hurry to get someplace fast.
If anyone has info on air shipping from Japan, please start a new thread on the subject.

Finally we made it into Japan.

Costs as follows for 1 bike and 1 driver:

Vanino to Kholmsk: 6.250 Rubles
Korsakov to Wakkanei: 10.500 Rubles (passenger ticket)
4.000 Rubles (russian agent)
9.000 Yen (bike ticket)
20.000 Yen (japanese agent and bike insurance)

Still no carnet needed, but international driving license or translated national licence.

Bike needs to be clean for japanese customs, there is a car wash in Vanino.
Otherwise it can be done on the ferry with a high pressure cleaner.
But they like more if you show up "clean".

Found a place called Red Baron Riders Club, located close to Wakkanei Airport.
Rooms, camping and repair shop for bikers.
