Japan, Russia, Mongolia, Stands.. with a 4wd

Hi,

We are currently in South Africa, planning our Asia part of our trip.

Unfortunatly we are running out of time to do some planning (or we will never get in Japan on time). Some assistance in filling the gaps would be highly appreciated:

- Japan: seems to be OK, we have the Carnet, we would arrive in Nagoya, drive to fishiki and ship from their to Vladivostok

- Russia: We still have to find a LOI (stantours.com seems to be recommended). Has anybody applied for a multi-entry bussines visa in Japan? Or maybe Tanzania? 3 months might be too little time for us, do we really need an AIDS test if we want a visa for 1 year. Any prices of all this would be nice as well

- Mongolia: Where would be the easiest to get our visa? Japan? Russia (where?)? I heard of 50US$/person for 1 month, would that be correct?

- Kazakhstan: I heard mixed reports about the requirement of a LOI, most recent said that it is no longer needed. Correct? What would be a good embassy to apply for? Price?

- No Idea how we will go from there, any suggested itineraries welcomed, we eventually have to get into Africa again (Egypt)

Thanks a lot!

Frederik & Josephine

I can help you with some of your questions - firstly, for anything regarding the Russian Visa Support (tourist voucher / reservation confirmation) check WayToRussia.Net - A Guide to Russia and Travel Services Directory - Moscow and St. Petersburg Guide, Trans-Siberian, Baikal, Russian visa, apartment rentals and more they have loads of info on securing the visa.

The requirement for an HIV test varies between embassies (as do many variables), but is generally required for all multiple entry visas, or visas of 3 months or longer.

The Russian embassy in Japan requires a little more paperwork (a confirmed itinerary) then other embassis, byt this is no problem. The inviting organisation used by wayorussia will deal with all this.

For the Kazakh visa, no LOI is required for single entry, 30 day toursit visas, but anything longer, or double / multiple entries, requires an LOI. David Berghof of Stantours is a wealth of info.

I've never heard of anyone having problems getting a Mongolian visa, but I've never tried myself. Try posting on thorntree.lonelyplanet.com.

I'm taking a 4x4 through Russia, Kaz, Uzb, Kyr, Taj, Afg, Pak, India from May 2007 to ??, maybe we'll pass each other going in opposite directions!

Cheers

Dan
