Japan Carnet Question?

Hello,

Im currently in Australia and looking into the possiblities of 'parking' my motorbike in Japan
while Im off doing some backpacking/pushbiking in Asia.

Does anyone know if you are actually allowed to leave Japan without the bike (imported using a Carnet)? From last time I recall that the vehicle details were in my also noted in my passport for some reason...

Thx

I can't say for sure 100%, but I don't think it is a problem.
Customs and Immigration here are two different entities.
Only Immigration checks your passport when leaving the country.

If anyone here has the stamps put in their passport from Japan, send me picture and I can tell you what it says and if there are actually IN and OUT stamps for the bike. If my memory serves me right, it is only a memo written on the page by Customs.

In all my travels using carnets I have NEVER had the vehicle details recorded in my passport - I can't imagine Japan being any different.

In South America (where I successfully managed to travel WITHOUT a carnet - don't ask, it's a long story) in most countries I did have the bike registration details noted in my Aussie passport.

I visited Japan last year, and now looking at my passport. They wrote in number of carnet and type of bike twice, probably when entering and leaving.

Well it could be just a memo... which would be a bit strange too. Unfortuanly I dont have my passport at hand but its just like @dane mentioned.

Now I had a better offer, the shipping company is willing to store my motorbike for free at the port wharehouse - which is before customs. So I ship to the bike to Funabashi, do a bit of backpacking in SE Asia and turn up in Japan couple of months later for the leg back home through Russia (Magadan hopefully..)

Sweet
