Info on South Korea and Selling

Does anyone know if you will be able to sell a bike (yahama 600xt) in South Korea and how you would go about it!!

Thaks for any help.

When I entered S Korea with my DR650 (air freight), they required a duty deposit or carnet before it could be released from customs. The deposit was going to be around US$2000, on a bike valued at US$3000, but I was able to use my carnet. So with all of that said, I don't think it would be easy to sell a bike in S Korea and get much money after losing your deposit or carnet.

Deposit? I didn't have to pay a desposit last year..

They made me buy insurance and pay for the landing paperwork, thats it... I had to sign a promise to take the bike out of the country by the stated deadline and that it would affect future visas if I did not....

Probably easier to sell it to one of the chaps at the Iron Angels or Iron Tigers in Vladivostok tbh.

The alternative is shipping the bike out via Wendy Choi, which costs a lot!
$300US from the Korean side paperwork, boxing etc, £400 on the UK side..... which was a massive burger because the day I shipped my XT back was the day it was stolen after going up the M6 on it!

Thank you for this information. If the need be then I shall look into that path instead. Do you know if there will be any issues in leaving Russia once I have no bike. As I have a Business visa for this country and am not sure if this will conflict.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Yeah, I remember your post describing the process, which is why I was surprised when they mentioned a cash deposit.:confused1:

Should not be any problem getting out. I live here but have a bike here on temporary important, and leave for business trips, vacation, etc. all the time without the bike.

I would not, however, rule out the possibility that it could complicate receipt of future visas if your bike does not leave by the temporary import expiration date (but this is just a guess, I have always renewed mine on time).

I saw you sold the bike in MGL, but this is in case someone else has the same idea....

my friend in S Kor was telling me they passed a law banning all older imports, & all imports now have to have EFI, no carbs.

he has a couple older bikes at his brothers in the US, & now cant bring them to Korea.

so I'd say it would be hard to sell one there.

altho I have never been asked to show proof of export or anything else when leaving Korea by airplane.

Doug
