How to get 2 sets of off-road tyres to Uzbekistan or Tajikistan?

Hi folks

my best mate and I are doing a round-the-world trip starting this summer. Before we reach the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan we would need 2 sets of new off-road tyres:

front 110/80 R 19
rear 150/70 R 17

I assume that local motorbike dealers or repair shops don't have such big tyres in stock. Does anyone know how to arrange delivery to Uzbekistan or Tajikistan? What about customs?

Thanks four your help.

Best
Chris

There are no motorcycle "dealers" in Uzbekistan or Tajikistan ... just markets where you might be able to pick up Russian or Chinese made bikes and spare parts for same.

Almaty is pretty much the only place in Central Asia where you have a chance of picking up decent bike tyres, but for BMW R1200 sizes you should order ahead. A search of this forum will give you the two possible tyre dealers in Almaty.

If you need off road tyres before Almaty, then carry them and dont fit them / ride on them until you need to fit them. i.e. dont ride across western and eastern Europe on knobbly tyres. I dont know your route, but you are unlikely to need them until Kazakhstan - in which case the tyres should be able to get you to Almaty.

You "might" be able to DHL tyres to Uzbekistan ... Tashkent or Samarkand ... if you can find someone to accept them including accepting the customs charges.

Hi Colebatch

thank you very much for your advice. I hope I can arrange delivery to Bukkhara, Sarmakand or Dushanbe somehow. Otherwise I'll carry the tyres with me.

Best
Chris

I agree with Walter - both Uzbekistan and Tajikistan don't have much in the way of motorcycles, and even less so parts/tyres for foreign bikes.

Apart from Almaty, there is one motorcycle "shop" in Bishkek / Kyrgyzstan, run by Dima who also has a shop in Almaty. He rides a BMW 1150 himself, and will happily have TKCs or similar waiting for you if you get in touch with him beforehand. I don't have his contact details with me right now, but you'll find it when searching the HUBB. The shop is the container town west of Bishkek.

You could try Silk Offroad guys in Almaty SilkOffRoad | Motorcycle tours, enduro tours, ATV tours, jeep (4X4) tours in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan
and see if they could help.

The Silk Off Road club guys (Marat is the best contact there) dont deal tyres, but they can introduce you to the two tyre dealers in Almaty.

They (Silk off road) also have a mechanic, but I would advise you dont use the Silk Off Road mechanic but use the KZ Motors (my town moto) mechanics instead.

Perhaps in Russia?

Colebatch,

Have you heard of anyone picking up or shipping tires to Astrakhan?

I'm riding to the Stans via Turkey, Russia, then into Kazakhstan. At the rate that they are wearing, it looks like I'll need to fit new ones in or around Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan.

Thanks for the help,

Jake

Doing a similar route myself in 2 months - just had a email from Denis
MOTOREZINA.RU
who is happy to send to Astrakhan.
Seems like he has a massive choice, and comes well recommended on HUBB.
At this point, I dont know if he has a contact there, or you need to ship to a hotel and arrange shipment yourself.... no doubt I will clear that up in the next few emails.

Anyone else reading this know of a suitable fitting/service ship in Astrakhan ?
Russ

Denis AFAIK always ships to dealers. The dealer that has them in Astrakhan should be able to supply a fitting service.
