Help me to get home from Kazakhstan

Hi there,

Just on the road at the minute and need to be home for tea and medals by earlyish september the 10th. Currently in Turkey and my 'schedule' puts me in Kazakhstan mid August approximately.

has anyone tried to train it back to st. petersberg from almatyy or astana. What sort of mileage am i looking back to castle europe (calais! or Hoek Van Holland) from Almaty?

I know its not cool and makes me a pussy in some of your eyes, but if i can save all the petrol costs and make it back to europe in a week (i reckon i can sqeeze st. psters to hamburg in two days with ease, where there is a ferry to London).

My bike is an XT660 and it less than 200kg's. Whats the story, what am i likely to pay, who should i talk to.

Getting the bike across a border on a train will be a big hassle, you could ride up into siberia and get a train over to Moscow or SP, but you might have to wait a while for a suitable train/crating etc...

I would have thought the quickest way back would be to ride from Almaty up into Russia (2 days max) then just ride back, I would say allow 6 days to get across Russia. I managed to ride from Moscow to Rotterdam in 2 days, it's pretty easy going.

If you want a train then your best bet is to talk to a bike shop in Novosibirsk and ask them to ship it along with other bikes to Moscow - you get a seperate train over and can spend some time in Moscow or SP waiting for the bike to turn up.

Almaty-Astana-Omsk-Moscow.... if i remember correct adds up to ~ 3500 km.s ... Roads are ok, so if you push it you can make it in 5-6 days .

Moscow or StPeter to London is about 3 fullish days of 700 miles each on the road.
No road problems and borders seem reasonably efficient for bikers.
At borders forget the queues, I just ride to the front, with jacket open, stop at front - 'tinker' with engine until front car moves forward then follow. Noone queries you.
