No

As of last month, I have reports of two people being turned away. The border is only open to Russians and Georgians.

You can however go through Abkhazia into Russia, but you will have problems if you ever return to Georgia with the same passport as it is illegal in their eyes.

Hi,

Thanks for the info! Did you read this somewhere or did you talk to the guys who were turned away?

I am actually in Siberia and a met a friend here who has just met two guys in Mongolia who crossed the border between Georgia and Russia some weeks ago - that's why I am asking.

So who has the most current on the ground info? Thanks!

Cheers, Bjoern

Hmm... that's very interesting. Are you sure they didn't come through Abkhazia? I heard of (though did not meet) two people who were turned away at Kazbegi / Verkhniy Lars. On the Russian side, everyone says that it's open (i.e. police, KGB, border agency), but on the Georgian side they say that it's closed...

I've heard so many contradictory reports from this border... I was 10km away from it (Russian side) last month - wish I'd gone and asked for myself.

btw Bjoern - did I meet you in Pakistan in 2008 (English guy with blue Toyota pickup)?
