Entering Mongolia with a car.
 

I want to enter Mongolia with my Toyota 4WD. I am a British Passport holder, and wish to enter twice, once at each of the borders with Russia.

I remember meeting someone in 2008 (or was it 2009?) who tried to enter Mongolia from Tashanta as part of the Mongol Rally, and, once out of Russia, the Mongolians refused entry to all vehicels for some reason, and as he had only a single-entry Russian visa, he had to abandon the vehicle. I have a multi-entry visa, so this is not really a worry, but is it now possible again to enter Mongolia with a car.

I also read somewhere (and this could be pure conjecture) that Mongolia was thinking of overhauling it's rules for entering with a car, perhaps even requesting a carnet (probably to stop people bring 100s tonnes of old junk cars in every year for 'charity'). I have a carnet, so again this is not a problem, but I was just wondering if anyone had any recent experience.

Also, regards entering at Tashanta, there was some hint in the LP that one should fore-warn the authorities on both sides.. this sounds like nonsense... is it necessary?

So if anyone knows the procedure for entering with a car, how long it can stay etc, please let me know.
