We just returned from a quick trip by car - clockwise around the Black Sea - crossing the Caucasus between North Ossetia and Georgia: Crossing the Caucasus from Ossetia to Adjaria - Gentleman Adventurer

BTW: entry into South Ossetia was NOT possible from the Georgian side.
