Carnet for Russia and Mongolia

After researching the HUBB, it seems a carnet is not required for Russia and Mongolia. Can anyone confirm this is still the case?

Thanks.

That was the case as of last year. Ask David at www.stantours.com just to make sure

Definitely not needed for Mongolia, and I believe not for Russia either.

hi, i'm going through the process of getting my carnet from uk to oz. as far as i know when you buy a carnet you buy it for a whole area, ie if you wanted to go to india and pakistan you would get a carnet for asia which would cover the whole lot. my carnet will include russia, mongolia china and so on. wether they know what it is and bother stamping it is a different matter.

simmo 8 Mar 2006 16:46

Allen, they know exactly what it is, but you wont need it in Russia or Mongolia or any other of the former Soviet republics. Dont make the mistake of thinking they are stupid. You will see truck drivers using carnets all the time at these crossings. Sean Howman got his stamped because they would, but it wasnt necessary.

Allen... That isnt quite how it works, each country that asks for a carnet demands a different value be placed on the incoming vehicle. The country with the highest tariff is India, therefore, if you have a carnet that gets you into India it will get you into every country in the world requiring a carnet! It isnt geographical as such. If you are going to go into a lot of countries requiring a carnet then just make sure you have enough pages!!!

Ps, agree with Simmo! You will see carnets at most borders and everyone knows what it is and how it works. It can actually make things easier, eg. you dont need one for Turkey but if you have one then use it; we did and got through the border very quickly!

Note that when oyu get the carnet you must tell the issuers what countries you do not want it for - they will cross off those countries so it won't be valid for them - so be generous in your choice of countries!

Wars, floods, tsunamis etc can cause major route changes.

Hi Ian,
We just returned back from UK to Singapore via Russia, Mongolia, China, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia.
No Carnet is needed for Russia and Mongolia. Getting the Russian papers (insurance etc) at the border is impt, the police down the road all the way till Siberia like to pull you over. Sometimes for speeding or such. Once in Siberia, the police are alot more friendlier.
Mongolia is very lax about checking anything, again no carnet req. but they might ask u to buy insurance at the border.
Just to correct an earlier post here too, NO Carnet required for Laos or Thailand- Land borders (flying in might be different, im not sure, they might ask since most travllers flying from nepal would have one). Please stop using the carnets in Cambodia, they are in no way part of the Carnet organisations. The more people who use it, the more the will ask for it from others who dont have one.
I didnt have a carnet for my UK registered bike and encountered no prob from UK to Malaysia. Singapore is a different matter.

Cheers n Have lots of fun!!!

Dalbir,
I'm sure your message is going to get much interest from us out there:
how did you cross from Mongolia to Laos ? how much hassle was that to get the bike/yourself registered by the Chinese, etc.. ?

Thank you for the details, I'm definitely looking into riding China!

Russia Carnet / travel docs

dear all
after reading these discussions and very helpful comments, my only question was: is this stuff still accurate in 2017?

- still no carnet required?
- still only Russian insurance allowed?

thanks a million?

I'm going to Russia soon and do not have a Carnet.

I believe it's only some of Africa and maybe some of south east asia as well.

KameOn 19 May 2017 21:37

Carnet questions.

Hi all,

The people that deal with Carnet's are very helpful. Just find the number for your country and call them up. They'll provide much better unto date information than someone that might of passed through a few months ago.
