Camping in Uzbekistan

Has anyone of you out there done it before? Is it doable? Recommended? or simply just forget it and find some hotel to stay at (due to registration requirement)?

We will be coming from Tajikistan all the way thru Uzbekistan towards Kazakhstan (Beyneu).

Cheers,
Lorry

We've have been camping near the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan, and 'unvoluntary' at the border between Kazachstan and Uzbekistan for a few days.

with comon sense, you can camp, but I wouldn't near the old cities or in busy areas.

Loads of camping in Kazakhstan though... .

I camped last summer between Bukhara and Kazakstan border in some unknown place. I just drove till it was dark, looked for good spot&time when there was no traffic and drove offroad to some heavy vegatation area in some truck tracks and set up tent quickly next to tracks.

There are plenty of places on desert and step.
Last year we slept about 20 km after border in Beyneu, then on the bank of Aral See in Moynaq (near the sculpture). Police visit us and only asked if everything is ok.
Also few places between big cities. Also there are many of cheap and good B&B in historical cities.

Wildcamping is fine. We did 3 nights across Western Kaz (coming the other way) the last one 50km from the border. When we crossed into UZB we stopped 30km from the border and drove out to some sandy mounds and camped behind them. Then another night on the Aral Sea (As above!). The only burning question is registration problems.

We will let you know how we get on. So far, 2 unregistered nights and 2 registered. Will be leaving UZB on the 20th to enter TAJ

Sounds good man! Keep me posted, please.

Off topic but I see you're headed to TJ. Are you riding the Pamir? Could you drop a line about road conditions later on, please. I should be riding around the same area in about a month so any info is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Will try to remember. We are driving so my perception of a bad road may be different to yours! drop me an email or a facebook message which will help remind me. I dont think the roads are too much of a problem there, no worse than anywhere else around here anyway.

Fuel supply

I entered Uzbekistan from Kazakhstan at the Karalpakstan crossing east of Beyneu, Kazakhstan a few days ago.

The crossing was easy (1h40) as was camping. The problem is fuel.

I was riding with an Austrian guy I met in Kazakhstan. We rode into Kungrad hoping to fill up with fuel before riding north to Muynaq. Unfortunately there wasn't any, not in the gas stations and not to buy from bottles.

Continuing east, the fist fuel we found was in Khujayli, just west of Nukus (approx 500km from the Kazakh border). Look out for women waving plastic bottles on sticks. The going rate is U$1/1ltr and despite what anyone claims its 80 octane (so we were told by locals).

Heading further east we stopped in a gas station here - N 41 58.605 E 060 38.171. They had no gas but after explaining our plight the attendant phoned his boss before producing two 20l cans.

Fuel is also available from bottles in Khiva here - N 41 22.866 E060 22.047

The fuel supply problem only effects Karalpakstan and the first pump gas we found was in the first gas station after leaving the region. The gas station is here - N 40 18.891 E 063 14.338.
After looking around in Kungrad and riding via Khiva my fuel trip read 1080km (from Beyneu, Kazakhstan)

Don't let it put you off, the people of Karalpakstan are wonderful. Just be prepared.

Man, this is priceless info! Thanks for taking your time, ride safe and hope to see you on the road (will start in Kyrgyzstan early June).

I have read elsewhere tales of doom, gloom and massive fines if the number of registrations does not match the number of nights spent in the country, is there any truth behind this or when you leave does nobody care?

IF the coords above are correct then the nearest town is Miskin.

Tip: you can enter coords in Google Earth in the search box and it shows you where.:smiliex:
