Buying V Renting in Mongolia

Hi all,

I am looking to spend 3-4 weeks exploring in Mongolia in June 2014.

Anyone have some current info on Buying V Renting? I am happy to get around on a Chinese 150cc and if its cheap i'll either leave it where it dies or give it away at the end.

I have no contacts in UL so will I have to find someone to register the bike to?

On the renting side it looks like a lot of the rental bikes and in really bad shape?

Is anyone familiar with this company? They offer self guided tours on a rented GPS, interested in any feedback on them.

THE BIG TOUR OF MONGOLIA ON A MOTORCYCLE

Thanks.

When I was in UB this summer, it seemed like you could get a brand new Chinese bike for around $500. You can rent a chinese bike for $15 to 25 a day.

I think buying is probably a better option. That way when the thing breaks, you can leave it and you wont need to pay the rental company. Or at the end of your journey you can sell it.

You might be able to pick up a decent jap dual sport from the "unofficial KTM" shop. There was a KTM 640 enduro for $4000. They would maybe rent?

Great thanks for info.

The only worry I'd have about a KTM would be repairs, I can do the basics but I'm by no means a mechanic.

I figure there would be plenty of locals who could fix a Chinese bike but probably not a KTM?

Thanks,

Tom

PS If anyone is reading this thread and is interested in travelling in May/June/July next year I am at the moment solo and would love some travel buddies. PM me if you are interested.

I just left Mongolia and have a friend that rents both Landcruisers and Suzuki DRZ 650s and some smaller 250s as well (drivemongolia.com). As for buying, there is a small used market, but it is getting better. I am planning on doing this trip next year with few people in time for the Naadam festival. Send me a personal message if you want more info. Best of luck.

Pete in UB

I live in Ulaanbaatar and would be happy to ride with you when you get here. I can also put you in touch with a guy who rents and sells Yamaha XT250s and Suzuki DR650s. Personally, I hope to be riding my own TW200 by then :mchappy:

send me a message if you want to get in touch

Living in China... riding in Mongolia

Pete,

I've just been offered a job teaching at a university in Ningbo (south of Shanghai) for the spring semester. I've ridden all of north and south america (arctic circle to antarctic circle), but Mongolia has been on my dream list for a long time. I figure I can buy a bike while in China to use.

Anyway, I just wanted to make contact and hopefully we can get together and do some riding in Mongolia next summer.

Hope to hear back from you.

Steve

Hi

I was this summer in Mongolia, entered from West - Olgii. I bought there a used chinese bike (half price, Shinerai Mustang) from an English guy who bought it as new in UB with ~550 EUR.

There is a company in UB, cheketours.com (tel 95161339); this company helped this English guy with papers and everything.

The bike is not comfortable at all, the suspension sucks, etc... but it's low fuel consumption and it works. I've ridden it from Olgii via Hovsgol to Suhbataar, where I've sold it (without papers).

this is a topic from some guys who bought chinese bikes in Mongolia:

Hi Pete, Sorry mate my plans have changed, I'm now riding from the UK to UB starting mid May. I know there is another thread that has just been started by a lady called Elise who is looking to do a similar thing though.

If you want to ride from EU to UB via the stans drop me a line!

Tom.

I prefer to be called a 'girl', at least until I hit my 30's :D

Yes, I'm planning a similar trip, but have decided it's probably best not to ship my current bike. From what I've read online (somewhere) you can't register a vehicle in your name in Mongolia unless you're there on a 90+day visa, not the regular visa Americans get upon entering the country. Any way around that?

Thanks!
Elisa
