Buying tyres in Eastern Russia or Mongolia

Has anyone bought tyres for BMW R80 & R100 GS in Eastern Russia or Mongolia. We are riding from London to Vladivostok and by the time that we get near Mongolia it will be time to replace the rear tyres.

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy some, or will we have to carry them from Germany.

Anyone know the answer.

Ken: You will not be able to buy the tires in Monoglia. I have an R100GS here and have never seen tires that will work on this bike here (I've been here 4 years). If you want to put on new tires in Mongolia, you will have to either bring them with you, or have them send by DHL or FedEx. Those companies are both reliable and pretty fast to Mongolia, but expensive. If you plan far enough in advance you could send them by regular parcel post to be held for you at the main post office. That would be cheaper, but I don't know anyone who has tried it with tires.

A few of the riders I have seen come through had their spare tires tied to the outside of their side cases. It makes the bike pretty wide, but it also gives you some padding if you have to lay the bike over to do any work or if you drop it over accidentally.

I second the above views. I worked in eastern russia for 4 years 94-98 and even 8 years later I feel sure tires are unlikely to be available. Given that you don't know exactly when you will need them, I suggest to review locations of DHL in eastern russia and when you have a good idea of when to replace, call home and get a friend to despatch to a DHL office further along the way. Tires will be waiting for you. You won't have to carry them.

Hi, I find out it for another european travellers now. You have a little chance to buy a tires in Novosibirsk. As for another siberian townes it is not possible almost. It will be best for you to put the tire on your bike at home. Take the off-road tires (like TKC80) for hard riding on Chita Khabarovsk road.

Hi Ken

I'm doing the same route and aiming to carry a set of knobblies (despite the hassle...)
