Budget UK to UB Mongolia

From your guys experiences how much did you need to travel this journey? I was intending a RTW thing but america doesnt really interest me as much as kasakhstan and mongolia do (and will certainly cost lots more) and would prefer to go sooner rather than later.

I realise cost will vary with hotels/camping etc but a ballpark figure would be great. I would be going 2up so pretty much x2 on everything except fuel.

May consider going as far as vladivostok and flying home if budget allows.

Also how far is it approx to Ulaanbaatar? 6000 miles or so?

Cheers chaps

Dont expect too much interesting in Kazakhstan.

Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan and Kyrgyzstan are better bets when it comes to "interesting".

You talking about camping or paying for accommodation?

DaveK 16 Jan 2009 16:20

Most likely camping the majority of the time with the occasional hotel for a good sleep/clean etc. probably 1 night in a hotel for every 4 nights camping.

I had considered going through norway, sweden, finland, russia and mongolia and the stans on route back as a circle

I reckon once you have bike, visas, gear etc ... i.e. from departure day onwards, your range would be £1200 keeping it cheap to £5000 staying in hotels and eating in decent restaurants.

Mixing it up, say £2000.

Its longer to UB if you do anything interesting, like go down to Tadjikistan or up thru Scandiland. 9000 miles more like it. More if you did both of those detours.

even £5000 seems cheap considering the great experience it will be :) cant get many 3 month holidays for that let alone see half the world

How difficult is it to extend a mongolia visa when you are in the country? I want to do a loop of mongolia going along the "main" central route from russia to ub then back along the northern route and not sure if the 30 day standard visa will be enough. id like to take my time and see what i can see etc.

Ive decided to avoid kazakhstan so will only need a double entry visa for russia and single for mongolia, nice and simple :)

cheers chaps

When are you planning on doing this trip?

I planning on an adventure in June for 3 weeks (wish it was 3 months!) seeing if I can make it to Mongolia and back if I have time in an old car.

Is Kazkhstan really not worth going into, as I looked into going that way but the main highway out of Moscow think it's the AH4 or maybe AH6 goes pretty much all the way to the Northwestern border of Mongolia and would be a lot quicker. I mostly want to drive through some cool scenery!

Im only missing out kazakhstan as it will make the trip easier what with visas etc. I will also be going 2up so some of the tougher off-road stuff will have to be missed :(

Im hoping a june 2010 leave, dont have the funds for it this year unfortunately

Three weeks to UB and back to London is going to be BONKERS. Your car will explode and you will lose the will to live. Respect if you manage it. It's a LONG LONG WAY. London to Istanbul in less than 4/5 days is knackering.

To the OP, as a rough guide I spent about 50 USD per person per day. That was for me and my girlfriend on 2 bikes. Petrol would probably account for 20 of those 50.

We were camping whenever possible, and staying cheap when in towns. And that budget included everything, food, accom, paperwork fees, beer and so on bar the time we did a big service and shipped some parts in.

And the north of Kazakhstan is pretty boring. You'll most likely meet some nice people, and Semey is a break from the desert, but otherwise I didn't think there was much to see.

I agree with Joe. A straight line on Google Earth from London to UB is about 7500km. Realistically at least 20,000km return... in 3 weeks... including Mongolian roads...

I take it you're doing either the Mongol Rally or the Mongolian Charity Rally

To make that timescale you will have to stay in Russia all the way and not stop anywhere. The fastest I've read for London to UB is 8 days and have personally spoken to a guy that did UB to UK in a very battered Fiesta in 12 days. Both were 2 up.

3 weeks would be more like a one way trip taking in northern Kaz with a little sight seeing along the way and no breakdowns.
