Broken gearbox in Mongolia

Hi All

I would love to report that all is going well but sadly not!!

We are in Olgii and after thinking this was where the real fun would begin we are beset by another problem.

We have a damaged gearbox in the Landrover.

We have tried the local garage here in Olgii in Western Mongolia but no success there. We are now planning to put the Landrover on a truck and get it taken to UB where hopefully we can get it fixed.

My questions are

Does anybody know a good mechanic in Ulaanbataar that could help us?

What happens if we need to find a replacement box and our Visas run out before we can get a replacement?

Is it possible to store the Landrover somewhere secure , get all the bits together and return maybe next year to complete out trip to Vladivostok?

My head is a bit fried trying to figure out what to do so any help/ideas would be much appreciated!!

Thanks

Callum

Hi Callum,

Sorry to hear about your mechanical problems.

In regards to resources for accomodation and references for getting mechanical things done in UB, many overlanders stay at the Oasis Guesthouse. German expats living in UB for over ten years.

Willkommen in der Mongolei

They could also help with to arrange long term storage if that is required.

Great folks and helpful to many a traveller over the years. Hope you get everything sorted.

Speak to the guys at Ashcrofts Transmissions. There was a chap on another forum that got a GB shipped to Laos.

How long do you have on your RUS Visa? would it be worth getting it there as you have longer for it to be in country.

I would Speak to the guys at Oasis 1st, they must have come across this before.

GOOD LUCK guys and keep smiling :D

Strongly recommend you get to the OASIS Hostel and then try around UB before you give up.

Last September I was there and met two Germans in an old and obscure 4WD whose diff had just failed. The owners of the hostel (wish I could remember their names) went out of their way to get a local staff member to take the car owners around the local car parts markets, which are extremely large, and within a day they had found a suitable diff. The cost of diff plus installation the next day then came to $240!

Alternatively unless the gearbox failure is catastrophic I wouldn't mind betting the local mechanics in UB would have a go at fixing it. So I definately believe there is hope for you in UB.

Keep smiling - I'm sure you'll find away around the problem.

I will third what has been said above, get to UB and the Oasis.

I am sitting there now having had parts sent out, couple of other hubb'ers here and various other overlanders. Great place where you can sort things out and relax.

The owners syblle and rene speak english and mongolian. And can point you in the direction of a mechanic.

Goodluck!

Thanks everybody

We are planning to put the Landrover on a truck to Oasis in UB and hope we can leave tomorrow night. They have estimated it will take us 5 days to arrive.

I guess thats one way to get a ride in a Kamaz although we will be living in the Landrover on the back of the truck.

Parts I hope will be on their way to UB from Australia tomorrow!

Cost of transporting us and the Landrover $2500!!
