Question Anyone travelled on a rear MX tyre?

Ok, so maybe not the right forum to ask this question in but its a start...

Here's my dilemma (well...one of them). I ordered pair of Mitas E-09's from Denis at Motorezina in Moscow for delivery to Irkutsk. He didn't have a 120/18 so I ordered a 140. Having previously used 120/130/140 section rear tyres on both my F650GS and DR650 I didn't think there would be a problem.
However, the Mitas E-09 140/80-18 is the BIGGEST friggin' 140 tyre I've ever seen; its like a superbike tyre. No way is it going on my DRZ400!

So, the choices are a Shinko or IRC MX tyre (plenty of grip but how long will either last?) or a TKC80, which will go the distance but is a crap off-road tyre (at least it is in 17/18/21 sizes).

My plan from here is to ride the Western BAM then the Old Summer Road to Magadan after which I'll backtrack and head to Mongolia.

So, has anyone ever ridden any distance on a MX tyre? What mileage did you get from it?

Cheers

Adam

Thumbs up The verdict...

Cheers Skip!

Sorry, meant to post earlier....forgot.

Anyway, for future reference I bought an IRC MX rear in Irkutsk and fitted it in Zhigalovo. I then rode the Westerm BAM to Tynda and on to Yakutsk and Magadan. Then back to Yakutsk, Chita, Irkutsk and finally to Ulaanbaatar.

That's a grand total of 11500km. Sure it was BALD by the end but it got the job done.

Note: I am riding a relatively lightly loaded, lightweight bike - DRZ400

My DRZ400 has put about 2500 km of mixed hard pack/sand/tar on its Mitas C02 Stone King rear and it's only just starting to wear. I'd definitely buy another one. It's a very knobby tyre but wears very well. No real issue on any surface. Apparently they last forever.

It was awful for the first 50km or so but once it wore that tiny bit it was fine.

Here it is with about 2200km on it (attached)

EDIT: also consider a Tractionator H/T http://www.motoz.com.au/shop_prods.asp?CatID=166

EDIT: also consider a Tractionator H/T Product Listing: - Tractionator Desert H/T - Motoz - Pneus D'Enduro, Tyres De Enduro, Pneumatici Di Enduro, Dual Sport tires, Enduro tyres, De Banden van Enduro, Enduro Reifen, Neumáticos De Enduro,
Just for info. The co2 is also available in 17 inch rear.

Here's an older post of mine.

While those 22,000km on the TKC80 rear were largely tarmac from Iran through and round India the next set (concealed in a TV box on a flight) did almost the same but up through Ladakh, the KKH, the Stans (including the Pamir Highway) so a bit more of a gravelly existence.

As I noted before, I guess I don't cane it...

Cheers,

Ian

Motorezina

I see from JediMaster's post that he ordered tyres as recently as July this year.
I am making enquiries re shipping four sets of TCK 80's to Irkutsk next year but despite emailing twice, have had no reply. Does anyone know if they're still trading and have I the right email at buy@motorezina.ru
Any help much appreciated
Cheers
Paul
