accommodation in Ulan Bator

Can anybody recommend a hostel or hotel in UB for a couple of nights, I am flying in and meeting friends so am not independently mobile and am looking for somewhere that offers airport pickup and perhaps a chance to meet overland travellers.

According to travel stories, everybody seems to end up at Oasis Guesthouse.

We stayed at the Oasis last year, it always has travellers coming and going.
Only downside is that it's a bit out of town, on the outskirts to the east.
You have to get a taxi ride to get to the centre.

Buses are v cheap in UB and likely to be quicker since the introduction of bus lanes. Taxi from the airport to the Oasis is 20000 Tukrigs (1 usd =1500 MT).

The reason it's called Oasis is because UB is a toilet and you can hide there from this horrible town.

OASIS CAFE & GUESTHOUSE

Print the purple map before you go, so you can show the taxi driver.

+1 on the Oasis, a bit away from the airport, but there you go, and it is an oasis in a crap town

tell the taxi driver it is on the east side of the Black Market, he will know where that is

Indeed, Oasis is not cheap for what you get. But 99% of overland travellers stop off there.

Sybille and Rene have sold the business to a Swiss chap, I believe.

I never stay there. Too far out of town. Personally I am not really that keen on swapping "war stories" with other westerners when I get to UB - and that seems to be a main drawcard for staying at Oasis. Would rather have a pizza or nice steak and a bunch of cocktails in the centre of town. You often meet young female russian backpacker types in hotels in the centre too ... another big plus for cheap central hotels over Oasis.

One "plus" for Oasis is they seem to allow or arrange long term storage of bikes. Heard of many people including Chris and "Gen@his" (cant say his name) who have stored their bikes there over winter.

Plenty of places in towards the centre. Cheaper and 200 yards from restaurants and pubs.

Great live band plays 6 nights a week at the White House hotel. (reminds me I have to add it to the file)

There are at least 5 hotels bookmarked on the waypoints file representing all price classes.

It's on Walter's waypoint list.

Well

Oasis is OK, but i am sure you find a lot of Hotels in the city too.

And i stayed a few weeks in Ulaabaatar, and i don't think it is a crap town.
I would even say, it is an upcoming town with a lot of nice bars and Live clubs.

Ok, the streets are not this good, but so what?
Most travelers go there because they love offroad.

And i really like the city with the temples, the museums and the bars..

The only reason for going at Oasis is for meeting other people/travelers. Went there and were disappointed after hearing 'so much' about it. I'm pretty sure there is better for less money to be found in UB. But like all places, some will love it and some won't, we didn't.
:(

i recently stayed at the Oasis. Sybille is super-nice and it was good chatting with some of the people there.

But it's location is kind of a drag, and moreover, it was one of the noisiest place I've ever stayed; between dogs barking, trains, construction (at night), nearby parties (not in the Oasis), it was difficult to get to sleep.

Little overcrowded sometimes.......

Construction at night is normal in Mongolia.

There is just a short period of time, where they can do this in the summer .
Thats why they work all day to finish as much as possible before winter.
