A362 Kyrg/Kazak border crossing near Kegen

Does anyone know if the border is open on A362 between Issyk Kul lake in Kyrg and Kegen Kazakh?

Locate
42.7913, 79.1588

I'd like to cross there this week sometime. I don't really have any desire of going back into Bishkek after Issyk Kul.

Thanks! Keep on :scooter:

I suppose I could ginnypig it. but.. If its closed.. its and extra 2 or 3 days ride to get to Almaty. I'll be talking to the Muztoo guys and trying to make some phone calls before hand.

Let me know ... if its still closed I will change the waypoint. I have crossed there in the past, but dont know when they closed it (quite recently I assume - maybe for reconstruction?)

If you are communicating with Marat, he would be worth asking too.

I think they closed it in 2010, perhaps related to the outbreak of violence in the Fergana region. I crossed itin 2009.

If I am thinking the correct border crossing it was closed after gun fight between border guards and some drug runners that trying bypass the control.

Sounds like my kind of crossing. I'll try tomorrow morning. The lady at a cafe here in Karakul seems to think its closed.. but im so close now I'll check it out in person. I really don't want to go back toward bishkek.

Good News!

Border is Open.

I went through. Its open from 9:00 until 6:00. Kyrgyz side was quick. I don't know if the guys there have ever seen an American passport.

The Kazakh side took longer because the customs guys couldn't figure out the computer program for the temp import document. So the other guys there fed me and gave me coffee. In the end they all wanted pictures with my bike. I was on my way after about 1 1/2 hours.

border kirgyzstan -Kazajastan

Hello everyone

I am also interested in getting into Kyrgyzstan from Kazakhstan. In August I will make a trip to these countries

I'm seeing some possibilities to enter Kyrgyzstan from Almaty

A) by Biskek
B) by Kegen

and there is a road / piste by the Chong Kemin Valley.Begins just south of Almaty, are just 96km and finish in a Lake Issy Kul

Anyone know if this last option is possible?
the track can do in car 4x4

It takes some special permission?

As there is no border post, where I would seal the output of Kazakhstan?

regards

On the 5th the Mr. Know-it-all at Hotel Arai in Karakol said it is closed so I returned to Bishkek and continued my way North and back home. -And it might've been open already. -Shite happens.. I'm in Yekaterinburg now and certainly not going to turn back for one lousy pass although, now that I think about it, maybe...

The cute girl at the Karakol Cafe made some phone calls for me. The border was not open on the 6th when I was planning so I waited 1 extra day and crossed on the 7th. It was a very enjoyable crossing. Mostly because I was the only person there that wasn't working.

Good news Noah,

We are waiting for our Kaz visa in Bishkek then a quick trip around the lake before heading north through that border. Adam is about 2-3 days behind us :thumbup1:
