Wisconsin to Prudoe Bay
I am planning my trip from wisconsin to Prudhoe bay. I would like to get to Barrow Alaska, just because it is more north. And also through Denali Antional Park
I am looking for insight or great places or ways to go. After those stops, i am heading down to Seattle. I would like to backtrack as little as possible.
Anyone have some good ideas or people to contact for help?

Can you get to Prudhoe Bay or is Deadhorse the farthest? My maps indicate the pipeline road is closed to the public after Deadhorse. I'd like to dip my wheel in the Bay.

Randy, I read your report. It's excellent. You didn't mention the "skeeters", the official state bird of AK. What did you experience with these critters? I understand the best time to travel is mid May to avoid most of em, but I would have concerns about snow that early. Dan

NO possibility of dipping your wheel in the Arctic unfortunately. CAN dip your foot in - you take a tour to the water and around the facility.

We hit Deadhorse 6 August and had no mosquito problem on the whole trip. They were there, but not in swarms. Camping was fine throughout Alaska for us.

It might be better to backtrack just a little. I should have!

Rather than return the same way home by heading south through beautiful British Columbia, I travelled diagonally from Whitehorse to Winnipeg. It's all farm country, goes on for days (was it three or four or even more?), and is boring.

Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay is the biker choice for the most northerly bike journey, but I'm not sure why. The Dempster Highway (a gravel/shale 750 km track) from Dawson in the Yukon to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories gets you almost as far north.

The Dempster passes the burial grounds of the Lost Mountie Patrol and brings the traveller into contact with local Indians. Inuvik is the jumping off point to explore a few Arctic islands and remote villages by plane, all economically.

I loved the beauty and remoteness of the Dempster Highway, named after Cpl. Dempster who led a failed effort to rescue the lost mounties. It's a track that follows Cpl. Dempster's path and old Indian trails rather than being a road built for the oil industry.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
