Where to store my (european) bike near San Diego from Sept-February?

Hi, everybody.

I will be riding my BMW 1150 GS (european) in July-Aug-Sept from Santa Fe to Alaska and back down. I would like to store it from mid-september to Januari-Februari somewhere close to San Diego since I will pick it up again to drive south to Panama, ship to Colombia and drive south. Anybody can help me on this?

Many thanks

I live in Yuma, Arizona, which is about 180 miles east of San Diego, but is on the US/Mexican border where California, Arizona of the US, and Baja Norte, and Sonoran State of Mexico meet. There is easy border crossings here, but I am 3 hours west of Phoenix and 3 hours east of San Diego as far as flying out of here is concerned (we do have connecting flights to Los Angeles International and Phoenix International airports from here, but added expense). Just a thought if you get desperate.

Storage

Michael,

I live in Modesto, California - the Central Valley. I am about 100 miles from San Francisco and 75 miles from Sacramento. I have a secure garage for storage.

My friend who is originally from Germany but now lives in Costa Rica just made the trip that you are planning. He left from Modesto and made Costa Rica in 14 days.

If I can help, let me know.

Simon, Tom,
Many thanks both for your offer. :thumbup1: Seems I am going to have no problem to store my bike. Until now I left it with a friend in Santa Fe, but he lives isolated and his house is nearly inaccessible by motorbike in the winter. Besides it´s freezing cold to get down to the Mexican border in Jan-Feb. I hope one day I can offer the same for any traveler in my region (Belgium or Portugal). Yuma and Sacramento both seems excellent.
Will any of you be around second week of September? Obviously I will pay for any costs involved.

Michel

I will definitely be here in September--however it is very, very hot here then, so keep that in mind. There is no cost to keep it here (and I promise not to ride it ;) I really won't!), but like I said you would have to get a connecting flight to the airport you plan to leave from, but L.A. is a good airport to get flights cheaper and directly, and there are plenty of flights to and from L.A. out of Yuma. Delta Airlines just started service to and from here from Salt Lake City if that helps, and, I think it is also Delta which has flights to and from Las Vegas. And there are a few flights to and from Phoenix. The downside, again, is the cost of the little flights are something like $250 one way, although with the Euro compared to the dollar, this might not seem as expensive as it does me!

Again, you are welcome to store it here, but it will be hot in September, but you will have easy access to Mexico. There will be no costs I forsee you will need to reimburse me for, but obviously you will have to consider your own costs you need to get out of here, and back here. Just let me know!

September - OK

Michael,

I will definately be around all of September. Contact me anytime if have any questions or help.

Tom

I ride a R1200GS and work in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Gold Country of California which includes Yosemite National Park. I would be happy to take you around my neck of the woods!

This sounds more tempting to me, IMHO, especially in September, but you will be far away from San Diego. Heck, I might go visit you, Tom, to get the hell out of hell!! LOL

Come on Up

Simon,

I know all about Yuma. In my past life I use to visit once a year to look at melon and watermelon product trials. HOT does not even begin describe what goes on down there.

Riding the Gold Country up here is really great. Some great get-aways, old Gold Rush Towns, alpine lakes, and of course Yosemite, etc. If your want to visit, you are welcome.

Tom, I would definitely like to have a ride together to Yosemite park. I was there some 25 years ago and still remember the great beauty of it. It must be great to go with somebody who knows the place. And the heat of Yuma does not scare me off, since it cannot be worse then the furnace I rode through last august in Morocco. I was close to Yuma last year, beginning of december, on my way back from Mexico, and remember how I warmed up after the cold and the rain of Tecate. Seems a great place to take off in January to ride south. I looked kayak.com for prices Yuma-New York and it´s cheap : 140$ (my return to Europe goes from NYC).
I will keep a blog on my ride to Alaska and will keep you informed. It would be really great to meet both of you in September. If you want to read on some of my journeys : www.michelbuyckx.net (part is written in french or flemish). Keep in touch.
