Whens the best time to go?

I am planning my trip to Alaska. What is the best time to go through Alaska. We are doing the Pan-Am, So I am really wanting Ideas of when to make this trip. I am thinking of June-July. When I looked at the climates of both places, that seemed like a good time.
What is the weather like in south America during that time?

Thanks for the help

From what a friend of mine in Fairbanks tells me the best time is May or June but I'll be going up there in July because thats the time I'll be able to escape from work. Get there too early and you'll deal with lots of snow and cold and much later and they have bad forest fires that blanket the land with smoke and of course mosquitoes.

After riding up there a few times, I'd recommend going in July.
Make sure you take the Cassiar Hwy at some point too, it's a lot nicer than the the Alcan.

Yeah, be up there is summer, and work your way south during autumn. You'll catch some rain in Mexico/C.A. maybe, but this schedule puts you on course for the southern hemisphere spring and summer. Perfect.

Your route will be very similar to my planned trip. I'll be interested in your report. I'm planning a run from Las Vegas to Dead Horse, then revearse directions and head south to the tip of S. America. From there ?

You're right about touring Alaska in June. Have been up there the past two years now and from just before Memorial Day weekend to the end of June the weather seems good. Lots of sunshine and little rain. Of course last year they were in the middle of a horrible heatwave during that time. The relatives I have living there tell me that from mid July on through August is their rainy season.

Take care,

John

I couldn't say about October, but our group is leaving as late as possible next summer for our trip to the tip of South America. The date for leaving from Deadhorse is mid to late August. The weather is iffy even then. I hate to think what it would be like in October.<G>

Take care,

John

Thanks John,

Well it maybe I can get there earlier, but I may just have to do it, as if I can't make it then I'll have to wait a year.

Not a bad idea if I have the money, could just live in the south for a year...hmmm!

Cheers

October is a no-no.

The Whitehorse Motorcycle Club puts their bikes away by September 15.

Inuvik experiences 56 straight days of sunlight centered around June 21, when I was there. It got up to 95 degrees Farenheit the week before, and this is well north of the Arctic Circle.

I rode up in April and experienced snow with temperatures in the upper 20's and lower 30's. It was manageable on a Gold Wing because the authorities keep the far northern highways cleared and salted. I was cold, very cold, but the Canadian Rockies in the snow are breathtaking!

Think of a beautiful mountain valley laid out before you. The empty road snakes ahead and the fir trees and mountains are covered with fresh, pure white snow!

As the road rises out of the valley, my wet windshield freezes. As I drop into the warmer valley, the sheet of ice on my windshield breaks loose and flys right into my helmet!
