Weather in Alaska

Hi

I am coming over from Ireland in 2006 and was just wondering what time of the year is best to travel through Alaska and the Central states?

Thanks
Eoin

And Forest Fires!

This one was along the Dalton Highway. Fires happen every year up there, mostly during late June and July. The authorities will let it burn right along the Dalton Highway, without stopping traffic!

Bingo! Rain will dictate how you dress - and it WILL rain!

If you go far enough north you can run into some snow in June, but it's nothing that's bad enough to keep you from making the trip up.

Best time is always when you can make it. But if you have flexibility I recommend the last part of August even into the first of September. As mentioned above you will run into rain but Alaska is also know for their mosquitoes. I think there is 120 different species all hatching out at different times, some early some late and a few in the middle. The last two weeks of August when I was there, very few of the blood suckers were out.

Yup, middle and late August. Still a lot of light, still reasonable temps (mostly), few mosquitoes, fewer RV's clogging up the highways, campgrounds and rest areas. Arriving mid-month and exiting mid-September allows a reasonable chance of adventurous times in fresh snowfall over passes and especially through the Canadian Rockies (if you go that route) on the way home. Nice fall colors on the tundra, too.

Hope that helps.

Weather in May Fairbanks

Hi guys, my bike is in Fairbanks since Ago 2010. I got there from Ushuaia and in May I have my return ticket to get the bike and ride back to Argentina. My question is can I get ice going to Calgary - Canada?
If is "yes" I will go south AK and try to sail to Seattle - USA.

Thanks I appreciated your answer and have many rides in the next summer
:(

May the ice will be gone in most places. Just be prepared for possible cold, wet weather and snow showers in the mountains. Roads will the fine.
I got snowed on in WY in June 09'!
