wandering around the 4 corners NM, AZ, CO, UT

I've just registered for the Colorado HU Travellers Meeting 26-29 Aug, and have taken an extra 7 days on the front end to wander around.

I'll be starting my trip in Biloxi MS and figure I'll need 3 days to get there (I'm on a DRZ400... so would like to stick to back roads) so that leaves 4 to wander and take pictures.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any "you can't miss" or "you gotta stop here" 's.

I had been toying with running over to the Grand Canyon and maybe up to the salt flats... but I think those would eat a lot of time getting to and from... if there were places closer I could see more. after all I have seen the Grand Canyon and the Salt Flats just not on Two wheels and not in 20 years.

so?

Four corners is in the Navajo Indian Reservation so a stop there is a good idea. In the area is Canyon De Chelly in AZ. and Mesa Verde in CO. But if you are looking to save time and hit parks Utah is the best bet Arches, Canyonland, Capitolreef, Bryce, Zion, and all of Glen Canyon all can be done in a week. Do know it is going to be a bit of an overload all the reds and browns all the time dull you to it. Morning is the best time to shoot your camera and ride it can get plenty hot out there. There are "hole N the rock" stops around fun to stop and look at them but not worth the trip by them self.

The Bonneville Salt flats is boring the Grand Canyon is grate but so many people go there it can be a pain.

If it was me skip 4 corners seen it not worth the time unless your going more south. Hit Arches and Canyonlands National park, ride Glen Canyon rec. area till a day or 2 before you need to head out then ride the pass in Colorado for a day or so.

AWESOME! thanks... really had no idea all these places were so close to my route.

Yes I've scrapped 4 corners as I'll be going through a good chunk of all 4 states.

know of any free places to camp in the area? I've heard that most national parks you can camp for free... but haven't been able to confirm that

There is a lot of BLM land out there all free to camp just do it off the road a bit. Most of the time any place out of the way will be fine. The national parks are fee camping but cheap what what you get some times. National forest is free camping, if it is legal some have no camping. BLM is alwas free some State land will be free. If you ride off the mian road at dusk and leve ealry no one will know you are there.
