USA ownership - property tax

I'm looking into buying a bike in the States to ride for a while. I can use my boyfriend's address in North Carolina for registration and insurance.

My question is: what happens with property tax? I've been told that I have to pay this each year if I own a bike in the States.

Does anyone have any experience of being a non-US citizen owning an American bike in the States.

I have a UK registered bike here but I have fallen for a very cute bike locally!!

Thanks
Kate

It varies state to state. I don't know about N Carolina, but we just pay the taxes at initial purchase in Texas, then registration and inspection each year thereafter. (Texas is also one of the states that waives property taxes for disabled vets.)

Thanks for your reply. I know there is a property tax on motorcycles here in NC... I supose my question is more how would I go about paying the tax as I do not complete any type of return.

Would they write to me or what happens?

There is a tax on personal property (including stuff like furniture) in North Carolina. Sorry, but it's been so long since I lived there that I forget how it works, but it's not connected to income tax (for which you file returns every year). However it's done, it'll be via your b.f.'s address, so ask him how he pays his tax. If he doesn't know, ask him to phone the state and find out.
