US travel insurance for non-Americans

Hi,

Our present travel insurance policy doesn't cover us for the US, therefore we're looking for a new policy which covers us to travel in the States on our bike. As we're Brits, we've checked a number of UK insurance companies, however they can't cover us if our trip doesn't start and end in the UK.

Is there any US insurance company who can cover us for the period we're in the States?

Thanks,
Hame

Try these people

I haven't used them yet (planning to later in the year) but it sounds like they might do the job.

bike insurance

HI Hame,

don´t know exactly about Brits, but they used to cover Germans: Pacific Specialitiy The PSIC One Spot , also good on foreign motorcyclists: Dairyland Insurance Dairyland Insurance

Another one, that covers travellers specially in the US, located in Germany is Tour Insure TourInsure - Ihr Spezialist für Internationale Fahrzeugversicherungen, Autoversicherungen, Motorradversicherungen, Camper-Versicherungen

Hope that helps, have a great ride
Mike

intsurance in the usa

Get in touch with a AAA office that sells insurance. Even here in Montana they can insure most folks as long as they have a international license.

aaa ?

AAA were a little awkward with us when we tried to insure. They required to see us & the vehicle at one of their offices in the States to validate insurance. Not impossible but difficult to arrange prior to arrival.

We ended up using PROGRESSIVE, two options of obtaining; firstly, via the web, online form completion and cover note sent via email or, secondly, by using an agent. We used 5th avenue insurance in San Diego.

contact Kimberley, kimberly 'at' 5thaveins.com 5th Avenue Insurance tel : 619-640-3130

tell her phil the english guy gave you her number !
we insured our 4x4 liability only for 12 months cover USA & Canada for $310.

The only slight issue is they need an address to send documents to. We just used the hostel address we were due to stay at. We have never actually picked any documents up. Kimberly sent copies via email.

US insurance

Hi Hame and Em.

I use Progressive.com for both my bikes. No problems at all, but you'll need a US address. They accept international licences, too. Not overly expensive, either.

Ride safe

usa insurance.........????????

Hi there

Just a quick line from Nogales where we have sat for four days trying to arrange liability insurance. We tried five different agents for progressive and all no go. Their system will not accept a British VIN number. Without a Californian / Arizona driving license it appears to be very difficult to arrange anything (even with an international license). Even using a hotel address is not acepted.

We rang the Nogales police department and they suggested 'FArmers Insurance' group (close by). Just got back and, like everywhere else, they only insure Mexican cars coming over the border.

At the moment it looks like we'll have to leave with no insurance and hope for a nice cop if they stop us - we have to get to Los Angeles as we cannot wait any longer.

BTW - yes we did try Motorcycle Express and still waiting for a reply as it seems if one person goes on leave - which she is - the process stops.

Ask nicely and I am sure that some of our US brothers/sisters will let you borrow their address and zip code then get on line with Progressive.com and follow the instructions. You should get 12 months for around US$100.00. Ride safe.

usa insurance

Hi there - for information and future people.

We did eventually get insurance through Motorcycle Express - damn pricey at 185 dollars for ONE MONTH - you can insure a motocycle for a year (according to a rep. from progressive) for 75 dollars if you are from the states (so they said!). The price difference puts it into perspective.

Ah well , such is life. We are now back in Ireland and pondering our next trip.......... ("Should we sell the house.......................?")

What part of Ireland you from?

I'm doing a trip to Norway in a month, cant wait, then back to the States and down to Panama.

visiting Ireland

Hi there - from the UK and going to Ireland to visit the family (father, sister, brother-in-law) as they all live there. From Warrington in Cheshire and have been home now for about five weeks. It really is no fun being back at all!

Best wishes.

If it's insurance for the bike, speak to Motorcycle Express, Gail Goodman I think the name was, very helpful. If it's Travel Insurance (including repratriation, essential in my mind) we use American Express and they DO allow riding motorcyles !

Sorry to hear you had trouble boxerbmws, but if you contact Progressive.com directly, they will insure foreign machines on the VIN - as long as you have a US address you can use, as maja says - and although it is likely to be more than the $100 a year, it will be nothing like $185 for a month - that is just a rip-off!

FI - I paid around $35 a month for my UK registered Tenere these last few months...

For health insurance, as Texastrike suggests, Amex will cover you for motorcycle riding (over 125cc), or you can also use the Halifax which I have done in the past...

Enjoy planning that next trip!
