uninsured motorist insurance policy?

Hi,
got some quotes for bike insurance, liability only,$100,000.
there is a option for underinsured/uninsured
extra, but very expensive....can't see many cases where this would arise....
hit and run? not covered?
any thoughts/vibes?or am i missing something here?

Uninsured drivers are a pain in the a*se if they hit you or if you get hit and run.

Like most insurance, its a gamble, uninsured cover was being quoted to me at $110 a month extra. 8 months away makes that nearly $900. That pays for a fair amount of repairs to a bike, but hardly any to your body!!

As far as insurance goes, I try to have my own major medical policy to cover my body. There are lots of uninsured crazy drivers in the USA.
A bike can be repaired in time but a broken leg here can cost you 15 thousand dollars. That being said I basicly drive safe and stay very alert. My only problems have been with attack deer.

Hi Merlin

Can I ask where you have obtained the quoted from? We will be in the states from 15th Dec to 31st Jan 05 and need soem form of 3rd party cover.

Thanks for any help that you can provide

I'm not sure if your inquiry is specific to the USA or not. Just for your info, third party liability insurance is obligatory in Canada - there is no exemption or allowance for under-insurance or no insurance - and the penalties are very, very stiff if you are caught driving without insurance - in the order of a CAD $5,000 (USD $4,000) fine for the first offence.
