Tyres, Canada vs USA

Hi Guys, I'm in Wisconsin at the moment en route to Halifax for the Ro-Ro back to the UK and an immediate MoT before taxing the bike and riding it home. My tyres are just about legal with maybe another 1000ml/1600k left on them. Problem is, should I get new tyres in the US or Canada? I have heard that prices differ a lot, maybe up to two nights accomodation c/w 6 pack. I am happy going round the top of the lakes or across the bridge at Sault Ste Marie. Advice please, of choice I'm after Metzeler Tourance 110/80 R 19 and 150/70 R 17. Ride safe.

Hey Mike,

How's things? I see you are on the east side this summer.

In regards to tire prices in the US vs. Canada, in general the US is cheaper. On line sites are the cheapest if you have enough time to ship it ahead to where you will be. The border towns have postal outlets were you can pre ship your tires to and they will hold them for you until you arrive. Or you can pick pre-arranged accomodation in any town for a shipping address. You have to get them fitted, but I assume that you are used to doing them yourself. Otherwise a shop will do it for our but usually charge a fair bit if the tires aren't purchased from them.

Here's an example of price's from amotostuff for quick comparison. There are located on the west coast, but there will be someone in the midwest or east coast located closer to your route.

If you prefer to do it all at a dealer, not sure what they charge but a quick call to a US and Canadian dealer should reveal the discrepancy.

Drop us a line next time you are out this way or we'll see you in St. Andrews at some point.

Definitely Canada for tyres. In the US, you'll buy tires. :smartass:

I've never bought tires in Canada, but have heard enough horror stories about how much more expensive they are up there to not even try. This site Tourance has a good reputation if you want to order online. Going to a dealer is hit and miss as to whether or not they would have those sizes in stock, and are always more expensive. BMW dealer should have them sice that's what fits on the GS.

Hi Guys, Hi Tom, thanks for the info, it was as I had suspected so the plot now is to head into Canada at SS Marie after checking the tyres before leaving the US then attempt to make it to Halifax with the option of darting into Maine if too much canvas starts showing, tyres still have canvas layers don't they? Ride safe.
