thigs to see and do on the Gulf coast in 10 days
Hi People, in about 10 days time I will hopefully be riding from the Matamoros/Brownsville border crossing to Pensacola before turning north and have about two weeks to play with. Any advice on things to see, do, eat, drink and stay will be most appreciated. Ride safe.

The riding is flat and boring but the beaches are great. If you're in the Tampa area I'd ride with you.

Starting in Florida, Daytona for motorsports, Orlando has Sea World, Universal Studios and Disney World for amusement parks. South Carolina, Charleston has Revolution and Civil War historic sites. Virginia has the US Naval Base, Virginia Beach, Washington D.C. you have the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Memorial, Air and Space Museum, all the Smithsonians, National Zoo. Look for the 318 curves in 10 miles Dragons Tail in Deals Gap North Carolina. I have not ridden that last one but really want to. Boston Maryland for Revolutionary War history. Philadelphia see the Liberty Bell, New York City Statue of Liberty, 9-11 Memorial, New York Stock Exchange. Niagra Falls near the state of Maine. This should help you a little bit.

Some of the beaches around Galveston are ok, if you like that sort of thing. "Historic" architecture from a century ago, too. There was spectacular hurricane wreckage east of there all the way into Mississippi last I passed through, but maybe that's been cleaned up by now. New Orleans, of course, and even if you don't stay (which as a drinking man perhaps you ought), a trip through the neighborhoods largely abandoned after the storm is like stepping into a post-apocalyptic future. Port Arthur is worth a visit (although you'll want to be long gone before sundown) if you ever wondered what Janis Joplin was so tortured about. If you've never seen bayou landscapes, a quick transit on the Louisiana backroads is worthwhile; same with a few of the Mississippi Delta towns just for context. More nice-ish beaches, although often clogged with high rises, once into Florida from Alabama.

None of it qualifies as world class, with the possible exception of New Orleans. You're into the thick of Spring Break--probably just past the crest now--so don't expect peace, quiet, solitude or frequent evidence of adulthood.

Thank you all for your ideas and also your social warning Mark although with my induced boobs and belly I think I could put on a reasonable show at a wet ´T´shirt competition. As to post apocalyptic landscapes, I think after Cuba I've had enough of them. My slowly developing plan is now to eat and drink my way between aviation museums as far as Pensacola before turning north and doing the same thing up to NY where the moto gets on it's boat and I get on my cattle class seat back to Scotland via Iceland. Today I'm living a life of relative luxury in Mexico on US$35.00 a day, tomorrow, the US where US$35.00 will not even get me a room in a cheap motel. Who exactly is being kept from where by that long fence? Ride safe.

Hi Mike,

looks like we're having the same route.
We're going to New Orleans in a couple of days and start heading north from there. Still hoping spring will come we're going to the Great Smokey Mountains NP (Tail of the dragon) and BRP. Then it's time to go to Toronto/Canada via Wahington DC and NY.

Hi People, I should be crossing into Louisiana tomorrow (28th) then across to Pesacola before heading north to Washington and NY.NY. where the moto goes for a boat ride home. Might catch you in New Orleans for a or three if you want. If you have already played in South America, don't get too excited about the "Tail of the Dragon". Ride safe.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
