For prospective adventurers here are my top 5 motorcycle rides

After clocking up thousands of miles riding around North and South America I thought I'd share my favourite motorcycling locations from the north continent. I have spent many months riding through the region and have been fortunate to ride through nearly 20 U.S. States as well as seeing the West of Canada too, so for those of you planning to ride through here, and in no particular order, here they are:

1. Black Hills, South Dakota

Don't miss the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway and a ride through Badlands National Park

2. Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

Deals Gap: 318 Twist and turns in 11 miles. Also known as "The Dragons Tail" . Take your time and enjoy the rivers edge, gorges, little mountain towns along the route. There are many other amazing rides in the area with smooth black top and sweeping curves. I can highly recommend Dan & Debbie at gsmmotorent.com for advice and tours of the area.

3. Pacific Coast Highway, Oregon & California

My favourite stretch was riding out of Red Wood National Park in northern California. More sweeping curves with dramatic cliff top views. The marine layer of cloud breaths in an out along the coast line shrouding your view to then move out to sea revealing the rugged coastline and cliff top hugging tarmac.

4. Highway 12 & 24 Bryce Canyon to Hanksville, Utah

If ever there was a life affirming road in the U.S. it is here. Be prepared to stop in awe of the majestic beauty. This stretch of road is in my top 3 for both North and South America. The Grand Canyon, Zion NP, Arches NP, Moab and Canyonlands NP are all close by.

5. Banff & Jasper, British Columbia (Canada)

Never have trees looked so green or mountain lakes look so blue. Wild life is in abundance here so get your camera ready.

I'm deliberately not writing full reviews of these areas so you can discover the beauty for yourselves.

Does anyone else have some favourite stretches of black top to share with the prospective adventurers out there?

I've ridden four of the five roads you mention and they are incredible! I took the Icefield Parkway on the way through Jasper when I traveled to Alaska. I hope to do Brice Canyon someday.

Great roads

In the USA highway 212 from redlodge montana up to yellowstone park and then over to Cody wyoming. This ride has been voted the best motorcycle road by a motorcycle magazine. Go early in the morning if you want to avoid traffic and see some wildlife.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
