Seeking route advice - LA to Black Rock City (Reno)

Hey All,

My first post in the North America forum, up ‘til now I have been hanging out in the South America and Africa forums. And this time round I'm swopping the GS for an 7 berth RV.

We are planning a trip from LA to the Burning Man festival in Black Rock City, NV. I plan to take 2 nights/ 3 days from LA to BRC via the 395 east of the Sierra Nevadas?

The plan is to spend the first night 2-3hrs outside of LA, I'm thinking Red Rock Canyon Park, Kern River or Sequoia National Forest.

2nd night, as close to BRC but probably somewhere just south of Reno or Carson City. I'm thinking East Tahoe, Washoe Lake or Lahontan Reservoir.

Does anyone have suggestions on RV camping or better ideas on how to break the trip up?

Cheers Rsstler

Hey Rsstler,
I can't offer much advice on your inquiry, but wanted to say that I'll be making the burning man trip as well. I'm headed from New Orleans on my GS. I was wondering if you had any clever storage methods to store enough water for two people for a week at BM on a 1200 GSA? Good luck with the camping and perhaps our paths will cross.

Rsstler,

I'd vote for Sequioa and for Lake Tahoe but you can't go wrong with any of your choices. Just keep in mind that if you are really cheap, you can park for free overnight in any Walmart parking lot if you are trying to make time. Sometimes it makes sense when rolling into a town late and you just want to stop to sleep. There are usually other campers and vans clustered, so there is usually the feeling of safety in numbers.

@MountainMan, great tips especially the Walmart parking lots, thanks.

@Howard_Moon, good to hear another fellow HUBBer will make it to the burn. Water is going to be a tricky one, I was recommended 1.5gallons per person per day, less if you not showering/cooking. That will be tricky on a bike. Do you have any friends who can take water up for you?

I responded to a similar post. I have been involved with motorcycle touring and Burningman for a long time. If you have a ticket to the event, send me a PM. I am with a placed camp, and I am willing to help make this work out for you. Nothing is sold at BM except ice and coffee. So you need to bring everything you need. I drive my pick up to the event and can help if you need some things brought for you. Dave
The Airheads BMW club has a placed camp at BRC we are at 5:15 and C come by or join us.

Red Rock is a nice layover, then Id press on into the mammoth area and camp, the on to Reno and Black Rock.
