Route 66
 

Hi

A Norwegian friend of mine is coming over to America and we're looking to do some of Route 66 as part of a general adventure. Anyone know of bike friendly travel books for this run?.

He's also going to have to purchase insurance locally because his company in Norway won't cover him off Europe he thinks. Can he do this in the states? My canadian company (kingsway) doesn't want to know because he isn't a resident. I could always take over the ownership of his bike I suppose, but there must be a better way to do it.
Any suggestions?

As for insurance contact geico and progressive and see what they say. One of them advertise motorcycle insurance and both are on the internet.

National Geographic did an article on route 66 a while back so look around their site or some old mags for the article. I believe Hwy 40 has taken over most of the old route 66.

I remember from my last trip to the US that it was always a good idea to get onto the Interstate road a few miles before crossing state lines, the reason being there was ( always, it seemed ) incredibly well-equipped welcomimg centres, with an amazing wealth of information and help - mostly free.

Otherwise, even the smallest of towns had a 'Chamber Of Commerce' which again doubled up as a tourist office.

As to the bike, there are normally a few options. Is it practical for your friend to take the Canadian test? ( It was very easy and quick for me in the US ) If so, the Canadian license will solve ALL problems!

Another option is, as you say, for you to officially own the bike and put your friend on as an additional rider. Your Canadian insurers may load the premium quite a bit, though.

Finally, phone around. I was getting the big no in the US ( unless I had the license, they said ) but eventually a broker made a bit of effort and got me a quote on the British/European license.

I'd be amazed -truly amazed - if a Norwegian company will insure the bike.

Thanks gentlemen. Sorry it took so long to get back to you--I'm at sea bopping around off the coast of Russia and our C-band satellite access comes and goes.

I'll look in to him taking the canadian test (Ole did slip on a sheep in Iceland earlier this year and bent his bike a little, but I guess he can still pass the test if there are no farm animals involved).

Do you remember what month and year was the National Geographic piece? I guess I could search their website.
