USA Insurance

Hi, Starting to plan a trip with our UK registered Toyota Hilux, being shipped over to Canada/USA & finally shipped out from the west coast to Australia to finish our trip.

Can anyone offer us any advice on vehicle insurance required for America, any links to providers would be appreciated.

Thanks Dave.

Hi Dave,

I found Stephen Stewart's post pretty usefull:

Canada & Alaska 2012

I am will be booking my truck onto a boat to Brunswick later in the year and will be going with Seabridge. They offer pretty reaonable insurance in America but I am not sure if they are able to provide it if you are not shipping with them. For example, a vehicle worth under $10,000 will cost $1,114 per 6months if you are under 31. It's expensive by UK standards but insurance for foreigners with foreign registered vehicles will always be expensive.

We're aiming to ship in October and will be spending about 12months out there if budget allows. Maybe see you on the road?

Nick

The Canada insurance will cover you in the USA but not Mexico if you end up going there. You can try Auto Insurance: Get an Online Car Insurance Rate | Progressive

It was easier, and cheaper , IME, to get it at the border.

Use progressive.com. All done online but you do need a US address so you may need to find someone on the forum who can help.

Note the cost of insurance varies by US state so,if you get several offers check out each one before rejecting them.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
