Nova Scotia & surrounding areas
I am planning a trip later this summer up the east coast of the US and into Canada. I will likely be on a Triumph Thruxton so nothing too dirt oriented. Anyone have any recommendations or must sees of SE Canada? Nova Scotia? Labrador? PEI?

Depends on how much time you have. In Nova Scotia the popular road to ride is the Cabot Trail (Cape Breton Highlands). It's spectacular. Do it counter-clockwise. Expect RV's and campers on this road up until September. We were there last May - before tourist season and it was empty. There are many great places in NS also. If you like history, consider Lunenburg. Labrador is gorgeous, but best seen on a dual sport. But HWY 510 is very scenic, and paved, from Blanc Sablon (actually in Quebec, but the ferry dock to Lab) to Red Bay. After that, it's approx 500 km of gravel to Lab City. I'd spend more time in NFLD. Nearly every road/Hwy stemming from the Trans-Can is amazing. Twillingate is a must as is Crow's Head and Gros Morne National Park! Try to get to St. John, and take the southern loop on Hwys 10 and 90. Watch for animals (moose), as this area tends to be foggy most of the summer. PEI is scenic and you can probably cover most of it in 2-3 days. Cavendish beach is a worthwhile trip. Enjoy! |
Viking Settlement worth a look
Not sure what month you are going Rich, but it had better be soon, because believe me that north wind can be cold and bring fog in. But if you can, get up above St Anthony (they have a nice hospital there, the rotunda is worth a look, I had time while recovering from a crash:funmeterno: as an inpatient), the Viking settlement at L'Ainse aux Medow is worth a look. Check if still open late in season though. Lots of moose that far up too.
The fare from Sydney to Port aux Basque was $68 in August, good value for a 7 hour boat crossing, and bikes alway seem to get on, even on stand-by tickets. When you come off the ferry follow signs 'East', even though you will be going west and north. Don't ask me, I'm a Brit not a Newfee:confused1: Best of luck |
Rich, just joined this site, I hope you already made your trip with it being October. I and my wife made it 2002 and it was the best trip we ever made. People where great. We have a website noting professional, but we do have a page with our Nova Scotia trip on it. After the first 5 min. Or so it’s mostly Nova Scotia. Have fun.

I wouldn't do Labrador on that bike personally. Dirt roads mostly, I spent over 10years living there.
Newfoundland would be my choice, Port aux Port peninsula, Gros Morne, Lanse aux Meadows, etc. Like someone said earlier every branch off the TCH is a treat. If you want more info on Newfoundland there is quite a bit on a local site, ridetherock.com |
Check out the reversing waterfall in the city of St. Johns. It is pretty cool. If you have time there is a restaurant overlooking the falls.

Just some new info for an old thread:
The Madeleine Islands are a great trip for a few days too. Ferry from PEI. If your into Golf, PEI has lots of great courses. (Personally, I think it's a waste of a good MX track....) Nova Scotia has a free Tourist book specifically for motorcyclists. Order it here: http://www.novascotia.com/ride/ |
