need idea for riding in las vegas area
 

Hi all,i am on my way to visit las vegas (buisnes trip)
i have 2,3 day's which i can rent a motorbike and ride. i was thinking on the G.C. (any idea will be welcome)
I'm just trying to work out the best way to approach,or the best area to go to get the best view.I only have a few day's or so would just like to hear opinions on the best place to see as much as possible.

I know 3 day's doesn't do a place like this justice but thats just the way it is....
Any thoughts?

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is the closest to Las vegas at 265 miles.
I think you be better off going to Zion Natl. Park and Bryce Canyon Natl. park. That would be about 245 miles one way.

when i was there i made sure i went to the clearance stores near the airport and brought the cheap perfume for the wife
then ride to williams great little town buy yourself some expensive indian bloke jewellery which your wife will take off you anyway!
then catch the steam train out to the canyon for the day williams has great cafes to eat in and you will also be on parts of route 66

I just got back from a trip to the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, etc. For me Zion was head and shoulders above the rest. I stayed at the south rim campsite on the Grand Canyon and truthfully i would have been happy if i just rode in, checked out the canyon for a few hours and rode out again. Unless you're going to hike to the bottom (which it's too hot to do at this time of year) there's not much to do apart from look into the canyon. Zion was amazing and definitely somewhere you could spend 2 to 3 days taking it all in and doing some of the hikes. Bryce was much the same as the Grand Canyon. Beautiful to look at but not much else to do.

I hired a Harley for 24 hours when last there - was enough to put me off them for life, but that's another story.

Rode out of town up the big mountain to the North East - Mt Charleston, which was pretty amazing. Snow on the tops even in mid summer.

Then rode back through Vegas and out to the Hoover dam. Impressive.

Back via lakeside road at dusk, which gave an amazing view of the smog cloud over the city with the stratosphere poking up through it.

Finished with a "ride" down the strip, which turned out to be a nut-roasting stop-start crawl. Kinda forgot those bilge pumps were air cooled, and when you sit in traffic there aint no air!

Definitely worth doing, but only once on one of them things!

Be sure to ride west of town and drive a loop through Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. It is only 13 miles on the loop drive, but it is beautiful.

If you go out of state, I would second the advice to see Zion!

Death Valley, Hoover Dam with it's new bridge and Grand canyon Skywalk.

Forget about the sky walk, went there 3 years ago; major let down after all the hype it had been given. yes it's a piece of cool engineering but we weren't allowed to take our cameras with us:frown: (hid small video camera in trouser pocket) also no shoes!! in case you scratch the glass (same reason for not allowing cameras) and to top it off the view through the glass isn't that great,

For me, Vegas is a place to eat, get gas, and LEAVE! I'll echo the recommendations for Zion and Bryce. From there, you can continue northeast through Escalante and Capitol Reef - not quite as spectacular as Zion and Bryce, but much more enjoyable riding as you'll leave most of the crowds behind. You can also get to the Grand Canyon from there. Same canyon but the much less crowded north rim! If you are looking for others to ride with, post something on Advrider.com in the West regional forum as locals often set up rides there.
BTW, Vegas is HOT - 42* C today.

I just returned from Las Vegas and this time of year the heat is brutal! It doesn't even help much to keep moving as the air is hotter than you are. I managed some spectacular rides to Red Rock Canyon and the north shore of Lake Mead in the morning and evening when it was a few degrees cooler (and both places have some elevation which also helps), but the slog through city traffic to get there or back wasn't pleasant.

I'm hoping to go back later in the year when it's cooler. Next time, I'll stay longer and buy a bike while I'm there (this time, I rented a ZX-6R for just 2 days; it was good fun but too expensive to consider for a longer trip).
