Mexico into Texas border crossing
 

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good border crossing from Mexico into Texas? Trying to avoid the big border crossings if possible, but still want to be able to do the exit bike paperwork on the Mexican side...

Also: How does it work with getting insurance for the USA? (UK-registered bike, if it matters...)
Possible to do it online prior to entering the USA?

If you are coming up along the east coast, I would recommend the Matamoros/Brownsville crossing. You would be coming up Route 101 North and you keep going straight through Matamoros. At one point you will see a sign directing you to the right for the other international bridge, but do not go right, keep going straight. At one point you will not be able to go straight anymore as the street becomes one way. Go right here and then take your next left. Keep going straight and just before the bridge there will be a small building on your right for cancelling your temporary vehicle permit. If you placed a cash bond for the permit instead of using a credit card, they will send you to the bank across the street for your bond refund. Then you can cross the toll bridge and wait in line for U.S. customs/immigration.

Progressive Insurance sells motorcycle insurance online, I would imagine that you need a U.S. mailing address. You can print the insurance card from their site when you pay by credit card. Basic liability is usually in the $100-180/year range.

Which Mexican Border crossing into Texas
 

I live in SLP mexico and have asked local Mexicans which is the safest crossing on the Texas border and was told the Colombia crossing about 15 miles west of Neuvo laredo. This area is Neuvo Leon and is not as dangerous and Taumalipas which is Reynosa, Progresso and Matamores, Try and avoid Neuvo Laredo, Reynosa and Progresso as these areas seem to be hotspots. But on any given day who knows? don't let it stop you though as there are many other parts of the world which are far more dangerous. PS you are on a bike I presume because if you are not avoid driving a large dark SUV as these are definately targeted by the cartels as they think you are from a rival cartel or just want your vehicle as that is the preferred means of transport.

Any border crossing is going to involve travelling thru the border area where problems are more likely to be concentrated.
However that is no reason to panic. This year alone I have used Brownsville Reynosa Piedras Negras and Ojinaga to cross in/out and never had any safety issues.
Travel during the daytime to get the border process done in eastern Mexico. Out west Ojinaga is really a calm crossing.

Crossed Ojinaga a few weeks back, super easy and super calm. Was in and out in less than 25 mins I'd say.
