Provincial Hwy 734 (Forest Trunk Road) Alberta

I'm trying to find out more about this road - particularly the gravel sections.

We have ridden in NZ and gravel (unpaved) is often very good.

Does anyone have experience more recent than 2007 of this road?

Wiki says it is 293km gravel - is this still accurate?

Are there fords to be crossed?

It sounds like an interesting "adventure"

Any help and guidance would be appreciated.

With thanks
Ursala

not your average gravel road

This road is still predominantley gravel however it is not a gravel trail. It is a wide highly used gravel road.

There are no fords to be made nor any other wild obstacles othr than some of the RV drivers that frequent the many beautifull campgrounds along the way.

While it has been a while since I have driven the route I seem to recall that some of the southern sections can remain snow covered fairly late in high snow years like this one.

Hi Ursala,

Rick is correct, the Forestry Trunk road is a very good gravel road. The ride along the foothills with views of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains to the west and prairies to the east is terrific. I've done the portion from Coleman north to Highway 40 as well as the portion from Highway 1A north to Highway 11 and both were very enjoyable. If you are looking for adventure then there are lots of off shoots where you can ford all the streams you want.

If you're in this neighbourhood towards the end of August please consider dropping in at the Horizons Unlimited meeting. It's always great to meet travellers from so far away.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
