Insurance in Canada - HELP!

I have read some of the threads here (particularly the one regarding Progressive Insurance), but I cannot find what I am looking for.

I am visiting friends in Canada and want to be insured on their car so that I can drive it. It is proving very difficult to do!

I have full, clean driving licences for both New Zealand and the UK.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to how I can become insured on a basic car that is owned by my friend?

In BC ,if the car is insured by the owner ,then anyone can drive it with the owner's permission .[provided they have a current license ].
