clutch spares needed URGENTLY
 

I am 1000 miles into the trans am trail on the borders between arkansas and oklahoma. This morning my clutch release shaft snapped!! I have never heard of this happening before, but I need a really quick fix. I have dealer shipping a part by thursday but I am on a tight schedule. Money is NOT an object. Can anyone supply me a part or give any idea where to get one before thu?

i recall david is on a honda xr400....

fred hink at www.arrowheadmotorsports.com in moab/utah does lots with xr-hondas. can he help? does he know someone who can?

He doesn't have one, can get one shipped straight from a Honda dealer to you, but the Honda dealer will probably have ot order it too, so probably no gain.

He did say that they do occasionally snap the head off, and it is possible to weld it back on. You could then have the part shipped ahead, and replace it later.

Have you tried to use JB weld to put it back together. Not a permant solution, but try it then just use you clutch to stop and start, not to shift until you can get a replacement part. Not a permant solution but maby you can limp it to someplace better. Oh yea JB weld is available in most parts stores. Good luck.

One thing you might be able to do. I think we're talking about an XR400. If you can make it to a dealer there is a good chance he has a new or better yet a used XR400. This is a lot to ask for some dealers so bare with them. See if he can take one off. I believe thats an easy fix from the outside.

Also, are you using OEM springs or after market? MAny times after market are stiffer springs which most often is not necessary. Especially if the machine is not highly modified, which I doubt since your going long range. This may casue undue stress.

Also, if your using the clutch a lot you may consider changing your gearing. MAke it lower, more teeth on the back. This will get you in the power with out use of the clutch. Of course , on the open rode it may hurt you. This is often why people will carry different front sprockets. They are easy to change in a few minutes and you can adjust your gearing as you go.

Also, I'm very interested in the Trans Am trail. Once you get going let us know whats up. Get a blog I guess its called.

Your ideas have already helped to set in motion a typical chain of odd traveller type events. I dont have time to elaborate here, but I pick up the part at 11 tomorrow morning and will have the bike running by 11:15 :-).

Sorry not to have mentioned the bike type, in rather a hurry! I did run an xt600 to the desert at xmas, but its a baby xr400 this time around!

Many people seem to have an interest in this trip, I fully intend to come along to the Horizons meeting again next year (the last few years have been great) and show some slides of the whole event, but people will have to wait a year for this. Is there anywhere I can post a series of trip updates? I write them for my friends and personal use anyway, and would be happy to post them on this board.

ps. why are most bike shops in the us closed on mondays??!!!

Shops closed on Mondays is a regional thing. MOst bigger shops are open on MOnday. We are open on MOnday here in Ohio. I noticed that the Trans-am trail goes through some pretty lonely states. So the shops you do find are I would guess are pretty small.

Actually one shop here is open on Sunday now for a few hours.

I know I'm interested in the trail because I'd like to try it some time. But, good info so far has seem limited.
I figure you could get your notes posted under travellers stories.

Most of these smaller shops are open on Saturday closed on Monday to give employee's the equivalent of a 2 day weekend. I've found this to be actually very common in smaller towns, cities all over North America.
