Buying a new DRZ in Richmond Va.

I am a UK citizen with a UK driving licence.

In July I am considering buying a new DRZ400s in Richmond Va to ride the TAT. I have contacted the dealer and been told that I will have no problems, even though I don't have a US address in Va. I can pay a deposit over the phone and then fly in and pay the balance by banker draft and collect the bike. He would have to put it on temporary plates and I would have 30 days to get it registered, which I can do when I get to Oregon, I have a mate there whose address I can use. The reason I am buying is, I will leave the bike in Oregon coming back regularly to use it .

Sounds very simple. Anybody see any problems with doing this? Thanks Nick.

Does this thread help with information about non-septics registering a bike in VA or OR?: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...nals-can-58648

Hi Chris

Thanks for the posting. I had looked at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...nals-can-58648 and unless I missed something did not help. I was hoping someone in Virginia may pick up on the posting and comment. Sending you a PM about the lowering link.

Cheers

Why not pay entire amount to dealer before you arrive? Have the dealer register your bike (using dealer address) and have the permanent registration/Title and lic. plate there when you arrive? Done. I'm betting he can even find you insurance ... but perhaps not the cheapest option?
But worth a look ...

Maybe you're thinking about avoiding paying sales tax? It's true, no sales tax in Oregon, but you may have trouble convincing Virginia dealer to sell you the bike Tax Free. This sort of sale is usually done dealer to dealer or commercial transaction. Usually, if you transport the vehicle out of the state within a certain amount time (like 24 hours) ... then you may qualify for a no tax sale since you are exporting it to another state. Not sure how Virginia works on this ... but for sure your dealer will know. Ask him.

Also, I'm not sure if the Oregon NO Sales tax thing applies when importing a NEW, out of state bike into Oregon. They ALL want their cut and most have ways to prevent you not paying tax. But good luck ...

If you don't care about paying sales tax ... then just have the dealer register the bike in Virginia before you arrive, get your permanent title and registration ... your good to go for a year and no waiting around. Fly in and Ride! You can re-sell in any state (but some states, like California, require 7500 miles on vehicle before it can be registered) I solved this by buying a used Speedo (9K miles on the clock) and registered my Oregon based bike with 700 miles over to California.

Hope it works out easy! Most dealers are very good at making this work, especially Virginia since they deal with so many military guys who are constantly back and forth to who knows where. Just keep a firm hand on your wallet through ALL of this. Would be nice to have a local VA rider be your guide to make sure all is UP and UP.
