buying bike in the USA
 

i am european citizen and wonna buy a bike in the USA ..is that possible,then after finishing the US i wonna ship it to South America..is that possible? thanks jos

Buying a bike in the US would not be the issue.

In order to register and insure the bike in the US, you would need a valid US drivers license. The drivers license can only be obtain if you have a "Social Security" number. The Social Security number requires a valid entry visa (student, work, etc...)

Let us know what you find out. Hopefully, I'm wrong :(

OP: Do as T.S. suggests: a search for recent threads addressing the issue in more detail than you probably want. The short story: you need to choose the specific location wisely, following which it'll be reasonably easy. You will need a local address, which can be anyone who offers the use of theirs.

I certainly hope for the OP that I'm wrong. My reply is based on 1st hand experience in the state of Georgia in 2010. Our company has transferred co-workers from our German HQ on E-visas to the US.

There is not much they were able to do until they had a social security number, including drivers license, vehicle insurance and registration, bank account etc. Of course, drivers license, registration etc are state concerns, i.e. each state may have different rules & regulations.

Besides making a general statement, what are the specifics to get it accomplished in what state? And, how current is the information?

Tom, listen: I'm on the road in Brazil. I don't want to bother looking up stuff you can search out far more easily than I. If you want answers, I'm telling you, it's been discussed at length from a variety of perspectives right here on the HUBB very recently. Travellingstrom has done it himself and posted about the process exhaustively. So have others.

What works in Georgia doesn't necessarily apply in the other 49 states. As you know.

Hope your search found what you needed, but I have had problems when given the same advice to do a search. So the short of it is each state is different but 12 million undocumented aliens do it every day so it must be fairly easy. Would be no problem here (Washington State) just need an address which should be easy, if you come here you can use mine.

Shipping to south America would also be easy, more fun to ride down though.

It is possible. I'm doing it and I know others have too. I'm buying a bike from a dealers in Alaska. And I know that the day I arrive there is a guy from Germany arriving and doing the same thing. They said they will help me with the registration and the only other thing I'll need is insurance. They've done it before so it is very possible and quite easy - as long as you're buying it from someone who will help you. I think the only tricky bit is that you need to register it with a local (US) address that cannot be a business or office so the person you're buying it from will need to help you out.

I'm also taking my bike out of the US and, once the bike is yours, taking it out of the US is no problem whatsoever.

I suggest you try and find a nice friendlt bike dealership (like I have ) to buy from.
