Buy in Canada, 'Export' to USA - Tax Exemption??

Hi Folks,

If I buy a new (from a dealer) moto in Canada and then immediately cross into USA, is there any way I can be exempted tax?

Thanks!

Paul

You can cross into the USA without paying a tax. But it can only be a temporary importation - legally up to a year - but they don't check. You cant sell it in the USA as a practical matter. US states wont give you or the buyer a title unless you get the bike certified as consistent with US environmental and safety laws. That is really an expensive process. But I think you can buy in Canada and sell in Canada. The problem is not taxes it's pollution controls headlight standards etc. Dave

Are you asking about Canada tax or USA ? There have been recent changes to importing vehicles in USA At a dealer level in Canada they have to collect the tax. One thing that changes import laws as well is what citizenship you are.

It can get complicated real quick as mentioned that does not include emissions. I have brought bikes in from USA to Canada got help from a broker.
